Firefly: My Children Know the Words to the Theme Song
« on: December 22, 2010, 01:48:09 PM »
I didn't try to teach them, it is just that both are learning (KGN & PK4) and I keep subtitles on.  We've been watching one of the episodes before bedtime since they got off school Friday and when Mommie is working.  During the school week, usually no TV/video whatsoever and only a little on the weekends, so this is a bit of a treat.  Some scenes in FF are too much for them and quickly get skipped.

BTW, my daughter likes Kaylee a whole lot.  My son is partial to Mal.

Also, my daughter was bored by Casablanca, but my son thought it of interest.

Your daughter has good taste.

Most "classic" movies are over-acted and schticky.  Casablanca is a perfect example of this.  Almost like they think they're on Broadway rather than a movie screen.  Dialogue is paced unnaturally, too.  Makes William Shatner sound like a champion iambic pentameter orator.

It could be that cinema wasn't so far removed from stage acting during that period. Bogart for instance performed on broadway from '22 to '35.

;/  Ah, different times, different cultures.  Casablanca was a classic.

Indeed. I love the films from that era. The one that got me hooked was "Treasure of the Sierra Madre". Great all around acting with no help from special effects. If you want to see a well played fight scene, watch the bar fight in this film. Whisper quiet compared to modern movies. The loudest sounds are the muffled and realistic sounds of fists striking flesh.

It was the acting only that brought scenes to life in that era, so if it sometimes seems overplayed, it's because there was no cinema technology available to create background.

Yup.  Picked up the DVD of that movie about a year ago.  Good film!

Heresy!  I love Casablanca.  I think it transcends any over-acting or dialogue problems, and I think those problems are minimal when compared to many other movies of that era.

If you made the same statement about Dial M for Murder or Sunset Boulevard, for instance, I would agree.

Yes, Casablanca is a classic for good reason.  The dialog is so danged quotable.  Treasure of Sierra Madre was the first hard-bitten sort of movie I ever saw.  My wife just adores African Queen.

And that ^^^ doesn't even exhaust half of Bogart's great films.

Then shall we move on to To Have and Have Not? My favorite part is the Vichy police inspector (or whatever he is). Hilariously dry delivery.

True...even most early TV actors came straight from the stage....makes old TV a lot more enjoyable than the TV-only actors these days....

We were getting a little cabin fevery and went to the park.

While I watched, the kiddos ran all over the playground setup, all of which ran around up in the air and connected.

The part to the north of the pavilion, which is connected to the play set:

I heard them refer to their "ship" and fighting off various imaginary bad guys.  I asked them if they were on Serenity and they replied in the affirmative.

My son played Wash and my daughter Zoe.  My role depended on which one ran up.  If it was my son, I was Captain Mal, but my daughter thought I was a better Shepherd Book.
