Preserving the memory of famous old planes...
« on: August 19, 2021, 03:12:12 PM »
I have a perpetual interest in the WWII Consolidated PBY Catalina Flying Boat which rescued hundreds if not thousands of downed pilots in the Pacific during the War.   One of the guys I worked with was a gunner on one of these.

So anyhow, I came across this related video  which puzzled me because they weren't looking to restore the plane, but to cut it up into pieces:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLwxGuNbmUI (4:26)

Turns out they take the skins of famous planes and make medallions showing model, name, tail number, characteristics, etc., and sell them:

https://planetags.com/collections/frontpage

I thought that was a neat idea, and more power to them.

Fly320s, to save you the time, I searched for "320" and didn't find any.

If the planes are no longer airworthy I think that is a great idea.

After the USS Forrestal was sent to Texas to be turned into razor blades the company doing the cutting up of the ship was inundated with requests for a memento of the ship. They started cutting small squares (3"x3" IIRC) and selling them along with a certificate of authenticity for about 40 bucks or so. I believe they sold quite a few, including to me.

As long as there are still some that can go to museums. Medallion is nice, but the ability to see a real live specimen in meatspace can't be replaced.
A plan is just a list of things that doesn't happen.

Well, I still had "restoration" in my head until I saw the wingless carcass.  "Boy, they've got a job of work ahead of them."  What they wanted it for became clear and I figured that beat turning it into frying pans.  (I found out that most of the PBY was doped cloth, including the hull.)

I note there is also a collection of "Nose Art," clipped off famous planes before they became Reynolds Wrap.

So I reckon the medallions are a good "Sentimental Journey" for a lot of people.

Thanks.

If I want a 320 memento, I'll just bring a pair of tin snips to work.

Don't forget to bring duct tape along to cover the hole.

That is speed tape.  Much more tapey than duck/duct tape.

^ My hero, rescuing the thread. I'm probably most at fault for the thread drift.

For a long time I was confused by the lack of wing floats on some, and their presence on others.

Took a while for me to find out the wing floats folded up and formed the wing tips.

Speaking of the original topic, is this thread about planes, or is it about flying boats? Make up your mind.  :P

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Well, somewhere I read of the distinction between "float planes," ie., a plane with floats affixed to them, versus "flying boats," aircraft with their hulls specifically designed for water, i.e. a boat that could fly.

I guess the generic term would be "seaplanes," except most of them use lakes.  Hmmm.

Then there are planes with skis attached so I don't know what to call them.

I don't know what the hell to call this one... skis and wheels and retractible to boot:

"Amphibskious?"

Reminds me of the several designs (and there's a new one out, I guess) for cars which could fly.  They're called flying cars, so pick your terminology.

Once the principle is proven, variants abound.

The next variant was to add a 12HP engine to it.

This variant had a few more engines added for 28,000 HP

Just jokin, Terry. The Catalina is definitely a flying boat, and not a float plane, due to the boat-hull fuselage.

I figured that from the phrasing.  Just went into it for general purposes for anyone having interest.

That got me kiting off on the rest.

If it has landing gear, it's an amphibious flying boat.

So it identifies as hydraulic gender fluid?
