Well. It begins. I am a doctorate student now.
« on: November 01, 2011, 12:59:29 PM »
Of course, the university has forgotten to tell me I was formally accepted until the first day of the school year. I was told to arrive at the doctorate students' meeting"even though you've not received your acceptance papers yet." I had been told of my acceptance only when I arrived at the dinner.

Now, if everything works out all right, I will be done in three more years.

Good luck, it's quite the road less traveled.  Has anyone yet asked you how much longer before you're done?

Oh yeah, and how's that dissertation coming? :P

Both my parents (peptide chemistry and molecular biology), my sister (psychcology), and one grandparent (chemistry) have phd's too.  I'm like the black sheep with only a B.S (aerospace engineering).

Doctoral student.  Not doctorate student.

Good luck!

Nice.

Do you intend to remain in academia following this?  (Teaching/Research/etc?)

Doctoral candidate!

Not yet. Not until he has passed all the course work and comprehensive exam.  In other words, is "ABD" -- all but dissertation.

Not to speak for Micro, but since it's in history, I thought that was always the plan.

I, too, share your black sheepness with only 2 undergraduate degrees..... =D

This! IS! TAU!

The course work  and exam requirements are kept as easy as the management can have them - as of now, exactly 4 semester-hours' worth of coursework are involved.

The idea that there are no jobs for people trained in the humanitarian studies is a myth. I have used my humanitarian-studies skills to become self-employed for a while (have now quit to work on degree).

But yes, the plan is to join academia.  There are of course also great options elsewhere that some of our alumni have taken. (After 6 years at TAU I get to talk about them as "our" alumni).
