So is Shatner really a pro second amendment guy, or does he just play one on TV?

I've not seen/heard anything that suggest one way or the other.  I do know he's an avid paintballer, for what that's worth...

I recall an episode of the American Sportsman from long ago when William Shatner was bowhunting with Fred Bear.  Shatner sent a broadhead over the back of an animal but insisted it was a good shot.  Fred laughed, found the arrow, and pointed out that it didn't have a speck of blood on it.  So, at least he hunts, or used to...

Yes indeed.  The troopers who carried him offstage reported to the rest of us that Shatner was pretty cool backstage.  Don't think the topic of firearms came up in their discussions, though.  =D
