Vegas, baby....
« on: December 11, 2006, 11:36:14 AM »
So the wife and I are likely going to Vegas for a few days to see some family.  We might be able to spend one night away as a mini vacation.  This would be kind of close to christmas, any suggestions on which hotel would be a good time?  On the strip? We're both 30ish, not into the club-thing but not adverse to having a good time.

I've been to Vegas many times, and stayed in many of the hotels, both on and off the strip.  If luxury is your priority, try The Bellagio, Venetian, or the Wynn.

For fun, I'd say Mandalay Bay for sure.

I know you didn't ask about restaurants, but have dinner at the Rosewood Grill, you won't regret it!

It really doesn't matter where you stay unless you care about the room you are in for 5hrs a night.  The rest of the time you are going to be out and about.  You will be on overload for sure.  You have access to all the places mentioned above and can see the collections etc... while walking around.

Good luck and remember what happens in vegas you tell to us later.

Good point.  I've stayed in dirt cheap places right off the strip, just to have extra spending money.  One of the better values among the newer places is the Stratosphere.  I stayed there for $40 per night once.

We're actually looking at the Mandalay, its a compromise between a decent room and not spending too much.  Spending money isn't a huge issue right now, we're not huge partiers or gamblers, we'll get our fill quickly.

Lots of cheaper hotel rooms are available around Xmas. Just about anywhere along the strip is good. Some may be a lot more expensive than others. Shop around, but don't spend too much. Cheaper is better. You will only be sleeping in your room a few hours per 24 hour period. I'm pretty sure you should be able to find something decent for less than 75 per night. I stayed at the Aladin recently, but it's under construction/conversion to Planet Hollywood hotel and casino. MGM is too big, Mandalay Bay and Wynn are too expensive, but places like the Flamingo, Imperial Palace, Luxor, Cesars', Bally's and just about everwhere else is pretty nice. Stay away from Excaliber unless you like kids around.

The days of the super cheap buffets are gone now; most are around 12-15 and up. Lots of really nice restaurants too.

I love Las Vegas, but I find I'm partied out after 3-4 days and I'm ready to go home and relax. I must be getting old...

As far as hotels go, I'm with Polishrifleman, I'm just in a hotel for sleep.  With that said, I'd stay at the Bellagio if I could get a good rate.

As for activities, my wife and I like the Cirque du Soleil shows.  I know that Eau (water) is a constant show in LV, and that there are other shows playing in rotation.

Paris, Paris has a nice bistro for lunch.
