The UK government had on online poll to name their latest research vessel. The winning name with over three times the votes of the next closest, was Boaty McBoatface. =D

I have been watching that, you think the government will actually go with it?

It would be awesome if they did. I mean it's a research vessel, not a military vessel, so what the heck, have a sense of humor. =D
It sounds like they're gonna go with the runner up or else Ithe david attenburough (sp).

Not British enough; should be "Sir Shipworth Boatface II" (Not sure where I stole that from)

Reminds me of the NCAR C130 research plane called "Snowflake," N130AR.

Yes, I noticed the "vanity license," too.
Rumour has it that after diligent data collection and stringent analysis, they actually found two snowflakes shaped exactly like the one on the tail.

Why? Snowflake kind of makes sense.
-
Didn't say it didn't make sense. Just the same kind of whimsical... ummm.... whimsy.
For more pix of Snowflake, image-search "AIRCRAFT N130AR"

I had a retired racehorse named "Sassy Hound."

Just read that the Limey government is probably going to reject the winning name and choose another . . . various pundits over there are talking about "disenfranchisement" of the public.
Glad that's NEVER a problem over here. ;)

Yeah, somehow I see the Boaty McBoatface affair as an unconscious rebellion toward the overbearing GB nanny state. Unprovable, of course, but it looks to me like an almost-tangible, timorous "up yours."
Is the equivalent of a Liverpool Tea Party in the offing?
-
What a bunch of poopy heads.
HMS Boaty McBoatface should win.

My submission: "BM-Bomber Stewie Deuce" hasn't gotten many upvotes. =(

The ship will be named the RRS Sir David Attenborough, but one of the remotely-operated underwater vehicles will be named 'Boaty'.

Yep. You can't trust the public.
