Title: Ok, wonderous ones...
Post by: 280plus on May 20, 2010, 06:39:37 PM
grammar question. If'n I was gonna say come up with a title like "The Guitar Lover's Sampler" is the apostrophe in the right spot? Does it need on at all? I think what I have is right but another doth question it so I putteth it to the panel.

Meh.

When in doubt, you can go this route:

A Sampler for the Guitar Lover

nah, I trying to make it similar to a "Meat Lovers Pizza" like you get at Pizza Hut. That pesky apostrophe is messin' with my head now though.  [tinfoil]

"Lover's sampler" would be a sampler for a single guitar lover.
"Lovers' sampler" would be a sampler for guitar lovers.

Either way you do need an apostrophe.

Straight from the horse's, er, something:

Meat Lover's Pizza.

Guitar Lover's Sampler.

Disagree with BP.

Lover's Sampler would be a sampler for a lover.
Lovers' Sampler would be one singular sampler to be owned by many lovers.  Eww.

Guitar Lover's Sampler.

The Guitar Lover's Sampler

Especially with the "The" in the title which certainly implies that the sampler is for individual guitar lovers (at least at a time... bow-chicka-bow-wow).

Either would be correct. The sampler could be perused by any number of guitar lovers.

Right, so really it's a matter of my preference, which leans towards pizza.  =D

Originally the cover was going to feature the singer girl dressed as a waitress and holding out a pizza with guitars jumbled on it like they're a topping. She was a pizza waitress part time when I met her and I'd already had the idea so it was like, "Wow man, karma or something like that." But then the playlist went and got all romantic so now I'm going with her dressed in whatever she happens to decide to show up in holding us out a heart shaped box of mixed chocolates. Meanwhile I'm sitting on the pizza idea for another day. There's rumors of a blues guitar sampler down the pike and a classical / probably no vocals too. The pizza might work for the blues one.  ;)

My problem is, girl singer wants to rock. She's good at it too but she has such a gorgeous voice for the smooth jazzy stuff and she's still developing. I would love to put her with a good coach but that's touchy stuff right there. I've got my tracks for this one so I'm going to bide my time and try to sidle her gently over onto the blues CD when the time comes.

I think it should be "wondrous" ones.

alert the style police:

POSSESSIVES
1.   Nouns: Possessives of singular nouns, even if ending with an s or z sound, are usually formed with 's. If a triple sibilant in consecutive syllables or a difficult pronunciation results, an apostrophe alone may be added. Regularly formed plurals add apostrophe only; irregularly formed plurals add 's to the plural.

    Common nouns   Proper nouns

boy's, boys'
man's, men's
wife's, wives'
fox's, foxes'
waitress's, waitresses'
species'      Mars's
Paris's
Mount St. Helens's
Dickens's
Athens's
Keats's, the Keatses'
Charles's, the Charleses'
Chris Johns's   Jesus'
Moses'
Texas'
United States'
Kansas'
Augustus'
New Orleans'

A conventional exception applies to singular common nouns that end in an s or an s sound and are followed by a word that begins with s: appearance' sake, conscience' sake, goodness' sake.

2.   Nouns with silent endings add 's:
    Malraux's
Arkansas's
Des Moines's   King Louis's
Peace Corps's
St. Tropez's   St. Croix's
Iroquois's   Rabelais's
Descartes's

3.   Classical and hellenized names of more than one syllable that end with an unaccented syllable pronounced eez traditionally take only the apostrophe:
    Achilles'
Themistocles'
Euripides'   Archimedes'
Pericles'
Hercules'   Ramses'
Demosthenes'
Socrates'   Ulysses'
Xerxes'

4.   Italicized terms add italic apostrophe and roman s:
Yellow Rose's hull   the Winnie May's engine   Time's article

5.   Compounds add the possessive ending to the final element:
    Lord and Taylor's
Alf the Magician's   John and Mary's house (joint possession)
But John's and Bob's houses (individual possession)

6.   Other punctuation with possessive: The second comma setting off an apposition such as Jr. or D.C. may be dropped from the possessive. A quoted phrase cannot be made possessive; recast such a phrase.
Joseph M. Blanton, Jr.'s memo    Washington, D.C.'s Anacostia River

7.   Pronouns: Personal pronouns do not take the apostrophe: hers, its, theirs. Other pronouns have regular possessives: other's, others', but each other's, one another's.

8.   Measures: Use an apostrophe in such expressions as an hour's work, eight hours' labor, a million dollars' worth, a month's wages.

9.   False possessives: The apostrophe generally should not be used after a word that is more descriptive than possessive, except for a plural not ending in s: Explorers Hall, Diners Club, the Department of Veterans Affairs, teachers college but teacher's guide, St. Elizabeths Hospital, Teamsters Union, visitors center, children's hospital. But the Ladies' Home Journal, the National Governors' Association.

10.   Double possessives: For clarity both of and the possessive form are often used when referring to something belonging to a person (or sometimes an animal):
This dream of Nelson Mandela's (means Mandela has the dream)
This dream of Nelson Mandela (means Mandela is the subject of the dream)
Even when there is no ambiguity, the double possessive is idiomatic and correct:
A friend of Nancie's
A friend of mine

11.   Singular noun with plural possessive: A singular noun can be used with a plural possessive for abstract qualities and figurative words: Four pilots crashed to their death, but four pilots ran to their cars; the men earned their living; the spectators held their breath; the depositors' curiosity was piqued; they kept their honor.

12.   Plural of a phrase containing a possessive: The plural is formed by adding s to the second word: master's degrees, debtor's prisons, ship's bells, lady's maids.

But, but.... what about "its," which is its own possessive and don't need no apostrophe nohow?  Never mind.  Saw its explanation in point 7.

But I double-blinked at:

Quote
2.   Nouns with silent endings add 's:
Malraux's
Arkansas's
Des Moines's   King Louis's
Peace Corps's
St. Tropez's   St. Croix's
Iroquois's   Rabelais's
Descartes's

From which style manual did you get that?  I'd truncate the "s" on each of those.  (Not challenging, it's just that some of them "look wierd" and would produce an interruption in the reader's flow of comprehension.)

Yes it needs the apostrophe, to indicate the possessive. If you intend to indicate ONE (singular) guitar lover, it is correct as written. If you are trying to convey "The sampler for lovers {plural} of guitars," it would be:

"The Guitar Lovers' Sampler."

use tabs not spaces
make sure you set the type with actual fonts not faux bold or italic

i hope you are style sheeting in Adobe inDesign or Quark

the first ( in (Get Your Kicks On) should hang outside the tab (align the G to the tab)

Cool, thanks. I was wondering about that. I actually spaced everthng else out one extra to make up for it. So the ( should be right next to the . with no space?

I'm under the impression my designer will just copy and paste and then manipulate it to her liking from thereso all the tab things shouldn't be a problem? I'm not getting the tabs thing. I'd have to go in and set them and then use the tab key? Me not that smart boss.  [tinfoil]

Make up your mind -- when using the forward slash to separate two names, either always use a space on each side of the slash, or never use a space. I'm not certain, but I believe the preferred format is no space.

Ya know, "280plus" is not a real word, or even a proper proper noun.  I mean, you have three letters, just smushed together with a word that isn't even capitalized.  Dang, dude, you are just so messed up.

Actually I have three NUMBERS just smushed together etc...

I may be messed up, but I'm not alone!  :police:

 =D

For the record, this season's average came out to 280.69 so I shall remain for yet another year, 280plus

I did drop off though, the previous year it was 280.89.  :P

So is a change of 0.20 in your annual average a sign of consistency, or in bullseye circles is that evidence of a horrible LACK of consistency?
Title: Re: Ok, wonderous ones...
Post by: 280plus on May 24, 2010, 12:18:18 PM
That's actually fairly consistent. The drop came as a surprise because my lowest score this year was higher than my lowest last year and I shot a personal best 290 this year. So I expected it to be up a bit. This year it was like I was either on or off. If I was on I'd be in the mid to high 280s if I was off I was in the low to mid 270s. Apparently I was off more than on.

I shot my first clean sustained fire target in this particular league after 8 years of trying. =D
