a Latin challenge has arisen...
« on: April 26, 2010, 08:45:29 PM »
My buddy and I are the smartest people his girlfriend knows (yes, she needs to get out more).  Out of (false) modesty I often talk about not being smart in and of myself but rather that I run with a pretty smart crowd. She decided to take me up on it.

She owns a big tire business here in town and is looking to make medallions to honor employees, she'd like them to have the following four words in Latin.

I, of course, only know a few Latin tags.

So, help me out and maintain our (my) reputation.

We are creating an honorary medal to recognize employees who possess the following qualities; however, we would like the words to be represented in Latin.  Would you please help with translation?  We are looking for the closest one word translation possible.

Integrity
Loyalty
Selflessness
Leadership

She knows about online translators but wants to make sure the tenses and such are correct, no "Romanes eunt domus" problems.

Makattack and Micro are both Latin speaking types. I think HTG might be too?

I'll double check.  I know you louts too well.

I'm more interested in getting the right suffixes and such.

Integrity = Bonitas

Loyalty = Fides

Selflessness = no direct analog. For "service," one of these might be suitable: Benefactum, Munus, Officium (Officium seems best)

Leadership = Ducatus, or maybe Principatus

Tallpine's got most of it here.

There's no translation for Selflessness. I'd suggest sacrifice: Sacrificum (easy cognate, too)

Leadership is another difficult one. Gubernatio is a little more official, I'd go with imperium. Power to command.

I'd suggest:

Intergritas
Fidelitas
Sacrificium
Imperium

Intergrity, Faithfulness, Sacrifice, Power

I'll see what can be done about "leadership" to come closer. However, I like the symmetry of two third declension nouns and two second declension nouns.

Edit: forgot an i in Sacrificium

I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Why not just use the English words?

My diploma is 100% in Latin except for my name and I had to get a translation of it for one job.

Yes, I went to a pretty pretentious school.

Because she wants Latin.

What about the Latin word for "generalship" or such.

Anything down that rabbit hole?

That latin is classy!
Just make sure the typography is bold uppercase case you know important stuff is ALWAYS bold & uppercase

and use a real flourishy font too, I recommend Zaph Chancery.
Nothing looks finer than a word set in all caps Zaph Chancery.

And maybe have bibendum doing the macarena on it

"The true mad scientist does not make public appearances! He does not wear the "Hello, my name is.." badge!
He strikes from below like a viper or on high like a penny dropped from the tallest building around!
He only has one purpose--Do bad things to good people! Mit science! What good is science if no one gets hurt?!"

Be careful using Latin.  You might change somebody into a toad or something ...  :O

Another option for leadership:

Auctoritas: authority, clout, ability to rally support

(as an added bonus it is yet another third declension noun.)
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

I'm surprised nobody's translated the "O Nobili" poem yet.

OK, here goes:

Latin:

Quote
O, Nobili

O, Sibili, si ergo
Fortibus es inero
O, Nobili demis
Entbuses, demis trux
Siwat isinem?
Cowsen Dux!

Engrish:

Quote
Oh, no, Billy

Oh, see, Billy, see 'er go
Forty buses in a row
Oh, no, Billy, dem isn't buses, dem is trucks.
See what is in 'em?
Cows and ducks!
