Strange ShotGun Ammo

found this SG ammo while hunting for some .308.

2 3/4" shell with one big 68 caliber ball and 6 #1 buck pellets.

Self defense ammo? What is the main use for this stuff?

It looks like something different to stand out of the crowd and provide something neat for people to buy. In otherwords, it sounds like marketing to me.

Although I'm sure it's plenty lethal.

That said...I am glad Centurion makes mini-shells...it gives me the itch to get a Serbu Shorty as a CCW....

"Plenty lethal" is right. I've heard them called "military loads" because they were popular in the trenches in WWI, for house-clearing in WWII, and close-quarters fights in Vietnam.

When I worked at Zoo Atlanta I wanted to get some for when I stood gun-guard during large animal transfers but the Chief of Security Security Manager said I didn't "need" them. Wasn't her ass on the line if one of the big cats got loose was the real reason. I settled for alternate rounds of 00 buckshot and slugs, and thankfully never had to use 'em.

It's an old school load, old school as in the pioneer days.  Kind of pointless with today's arms and loads, but it's not new or unique.
