Well, we knew this was coming and we know where it's got to go, don't we?  We are supposed to tolerate a new AWB because of the threat to MEXICO???  And what in hell are "cop-killer bullets?"  Does that mean hollow-points or any centerfire cartridge?  This can't fly under Heller and Holder, of all people, should know that.

Canaries two and three, by the way, are muzzling talk radio and prospective illegal alien amnesty.

God save America.

Obama to Seek New Assault Weapons Ban
Attorney General Says White House Also Looking at Ban on 'Cop-Killer' Bullets

By JASON RYAN
WASHINGTON, Feb. 25, 2009—

The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

"As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons," Holder told reporters.

Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border.

"I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum." Holder said at a news conference on the arrest of more than 700 people in a drug enforcement crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the U.S.

Mexican government officials have complained that the availability of sophisticated guns from the United States have emboldened drug traffickers to fight over access routes into the U.S.

A State Department travel warning issued Feb. 20, 2009, reflected government concerns about the violence.

"Some recent Mexican army and police confrontations with drug cartels have resembled small-unit combat, with cartels employing automatic weapons and grenades," the warning said. "Large firefights have taken place in many towns and cities across Mexico, but most recently in northern Mexico, including Tijuana, Chihuahua City and Ciudad Juarez."

At the news conference today, Holder described his discussions with his Mexican counterpart about the recent spike in violence.

"I met yesterday with Attorney General Medina Mora of Mexico, and we discussed the unprecedented levels of violence his country is facing because of their enforcement efforts," he said.

Holder declined to offer any time frame for the reimplementation of the assault weapons ban, however.

"It's something, as I said, that the president talked about during the campaign," he said. "There are obviously a number of things that are -- that have been taking up a substantial amount of his time, and so, I'm not sure exactly what the sequencing will be."

In a brief interview with ABC News, Wayne LaPierre, president of the National Rifle Association, said, "I think there are a lot of Democrats on Capitol Hill cringing at Eric Holder's comments right now."

During his confirmation hearing, Holder told the Senate Judiciary Committee about other gun control measures the Obama administration may consider.

"I think closing the gun show loophole, the banning of cop-killer bullets and I also think that making the assault weapons ban permanent, would be something that would be permitted under Heller," Holder said, referring to the Supreme Court ruling in Washington, D.C. v. Heller, which asserted the Second Amendment as an individual's right to own a weapon.

The Assault Weapons Ban signed into law by President Clinton in 1994 banned 19 types of semi-automatic military-style guns and ammunition clips with more than 10 rounds.

"A semi-automatic is a quintessential self-defense firearm owned by American citizens in this country," LaPierre said. "I think it is clearly covered under Heller and it's clearly, I think, protected by the Constitution."

I knew it, I knew it, I KNEW IT!!

BHO waited a whole month before having his lackey announce his plan to reinstate the AWB.  Of course this could be worse, as Holder is already stating that he wants a "ban on the sale of assault weapons."  The old AWB never did that, it only banned the manufacture of new guns being called "assault weapons."

What I can't hardly believe is that our liberties are being sacrificed for the problems of another country where those weapons are illegal.

If anyone thought the panic had slowed down just a bit, well hold on, its going to get even harder to find guns and ammo in stock once this news hits the airwaves.

Fire it up, boys and girls.  This (and everything else... sigh) is the big fight.

I wonder if he's doing this as a distraction end-run though, to piss us all off and get us running left while he goes right.  Do you think he wants socialism more, or a AWB society more?

I've got enough anger and frustration to fight loudly on both fronts, but I'm curious which he'd pick if given a "Capitol Hill" style decision of one or the other...

We could check the archives here to find folks who swore that Obama had no interest in a new AWB...

So, how do we fight it?

That's the million dollar question.

I'm increasingly disinterested in the "write your congressmen!!!" option.  Quite honestly, has that ever helped?  In the game of politics, what *we* (a small minority voting block) want is very low on the list of priorities.  Especially when what we want directly conflicts with such noble agendas as 'fighting crime' and 'being tough on gangs'.

I submit that what we do is irrelevant.  How do you fight it, you ask?  You don't.

One of my senators will vote against it, the other probably for it (go piss up a rope, Lindsay). The reps...Barrett against it, at least one of the others (Inglis, I think) will likely vote for it.

Hey, how about them Blue Dog democrats, though (yeah, right)

I don't know of an effective way of fighting it. We've said no before and they don't listen...

Redcoats were cops... I seem to remember a lot of killing of them being mentioned in some books I've read somewhere.

I think it's good for law enforcement to fear the muzzle of my gun.  I certainly fear theirs.  The reciprocity keeps us both (mostly) honest.

So...lie about everything in one month. Check.

Blow up the freaking economy in one month. Check.

LIE ABOUT NOT TAKING OUR GUNS.

Check.

They wasted no time at all. What was that some people said about Democrats learning from the past, that they wouldn't touch the third rail? What?

The people that said that are strangely quiet today, for some reason...hmm?

Of course, NRA-ILA is still asleep at the wheel and isn't covering it yet. So much for "our side" ever being as agile as the liberals with the web. Don't they have any bloggers? I mean, come on...

And I knew Holder would do this. Cop-killer bullets. Right. That's all rifle ammo.

Meanwhile, Heller has been stretched a little:

from thehill.com

Gun-control advocates buoyed by Supreme Court ruling on firearms
By Reid Wilson
Posted: 02/24/09 08:41 PM [ET]
In its first major ruling on gun rights following a sweeping decision that largely defined the Second Amendment, the Supreme Court on Tuesday offered a hopeful sign to gun control advocates by upholding a ban on some gun ownership rights.

The seven to two majority opinion, authored by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, upheld a 1996 amendment that prevents those convicted of misdemeanor domestic abuse from owning firearms.

The Supreme Court ruled a challenge the Bush administration made to a Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling on the so-called Lautenberg Amendment. The Fourth Circuit interpreted the Lautenberg amendment narrowly, and the ruling would have greatly expanded the ability of domestic abusers to own weapons.

Gun control advocates hailed the ruling as a good sign following the Court's decision in District of Columbia v. Heller, a 2008 decision that defined the Second Amendment as covering an individual's right to possess weapons. That decision was the first time the Court had ever ruled so broadly on gun rights.

But the Heller ruling suggested that some reasonable restrictions to gun ownership would be allowed. "That's a good sign that Heller is the limited ruling we thought it was," said Daniel Vice, a senior attorney at the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

“Today, the Supreme Court sided with abused women and children and against the gun lobby,” said Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), a gun control advocate and the author of the original amendment.

“Today's decision means we can continue keeping guns out of dangerous hands and saving innocent lives.”

Gun control advocates spun the decision as a blow to gun rights groups. The National Rifle Association and major gun rights backers in Congress did not immediately comment for this story.

The Brady Center and more than a dozen law enforcement organizations submitted a friend of the court brief backing the Launtenberg Amendment, citing the hundreds of domestic violence deaths each year they say are prevented by the amendment. Law enforcement organizations also said a significant proportion of police officer deaths each year occur during responses to domestic violence calls.

Ginsburg's majority opinion attracted Justice Anthony Kennedy, the court's most centrist member, along with conservatives Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas. Thomas concurred with all but one section of the ruling.

Justices Antonin Scalia and John Roberts were the lone dissenters.

I think we all knew it was coming.  A lot of us thought it may not happen because the backlash that will likely be seen in 2010 would stop them.  I guess we were wrong.

It's shaping up to be a hell of a battle.  I wonder who is going to win?

But is it really going to be "a hell of a battle"? I think the Dems are just going to vote nearly in lockstep (something the Republicans cannot seem to grasp) and happily send it up for Obama to sign. Not to mention that there are RINOs that will happily assist them and make up for any of the few Dem congresscritters that may not vote for it (the so-called "blue dog" democrats, which means we get to see what side they will stand on")

I really didn't think they'd be this stupid.

Either we're going down in flames, or this administration is. There's no way that a ban will be passed without supporters losing their seats in 2010. I thought the Democrat leadership recognized that.

Just send this to Sen. Mark Warner. I'll be sending the same to Sen. Jim Webb and my Rep., Gerry Connolly, tomorrow.

"Despite the new administration's pre-election pledges to the contrary, Attorney General Holder has confirmed law-abiding firearms owners' worst fears and has stated that President Obama will seek a new so-called "assault weapons" ban (AWB). (http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=6960824&page=1)

As Governor of Virginia you were a friend of the law-abiding firearms owner -- I urge you not to abandon gunowners nationwide and do everything you can to block this new legislative boondogle when it is introduced.

As you know, such laws only serve to impact the rights of those who are law-abiding in the first place. Not even the Federal Bureau of Investigation could find any evidence that President Clinton's 1994 AWB did the slightest thing to make Americans safer by reducing crime.

Now we're being told that not only would a new AWB make American safer, it would also help make Mexico safer by supposedly interdicting the supply of firearms to that nation's drug cartels. Since when is Mexico's inability to control its own internal crime problems a recipe for Americans to surrender even more of their Second Amendment rights?

Again, I urge you to do everything that you can to prevent this bill from ever becoming law.

Sincerely,"

This is depressing.   =(  Though not in the least surprising.

I think that all we CAN do is write our congressmen/women.  Or show up at their office and explain that we will be voting for the other guy next election if they vote for whatever bill comes out of this.  Or call them.  If they get enough phone calls, maybe they'll think about their actions.  Likely not, but I bet all those newly elected Dem's might think twice before pulling party line, when all of the people that got them elected are telling them to back the hell off.

I say we cannot give up now.  This really is for the children, our children.
