Calling all jazz aficionados!
« on: January 04, 2006, 06:49:16 AM »
I got a gift card for Christmas, and it has come time to spend it now.  Im looking to add some more jazz to my collection, but Im not sure what I want to get. Ive narrowed my choices down to these albums and this collection:

Lee Morgan The Sidewinder http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000IL26/qid=1136398311/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-5408778-4379133?n=507846&s=music&v=glance

Thelonious Monk Solo Monk http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000AVHBN/qid=1136398342/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/104-5408778-4379133?s=music&v=glance&n=5174, Monk's Dream http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006GO99/qid=1136398362/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/104-5408778-4379133?s=music&v=glance&n=5174

Brad Mehldau Day is Done http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ATJYLC/qid=1136398383/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/104-5408778-4379133?s=music&v=glance&n=5174

Charlie Parker The Complete Savoy and Dial Master Takes http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006H6A6/qid=1136398406/sr=11-1/ref=sr_11_1/104-5408778-4379133?n=5174

(Links are to Amazon)

I really want all four of those albums and the Charlie Parker set, but dont know which one to get. The Charlie Parker set is a bit more expensive than the others, and Id have to make up the difference with cash.

Any recommendations, reviews, comments about these albums? Other suggestion for what I might like and want to get?

Just because I've never listened to any of his work and I'm told he was a genius, I'd go for the Monk. I should get those myself.

FYI, Your links appear to be broken.

Don't know much about jazz, the only station around here was a "smooth jazz" format. Mostly they played old 70's -80's disco ballads. I went to Amazon and gave a listen to these and I like some of them.

I'm going to be watching this thread for some good ideas on stuff to check out.

Fixed the links. It's funny that they didn't work, I posted that exact same post at Bladeforums and the links worked fine.

Jaco Pastorius

I'm told that Jon Scofield is very good.

Depends what you like.  Modern? Norman Brown is a phenomenal guitarist.  Everette Harp makes Kenny G look like a clown.

Of those you listed, I am *of course* partial to my "namesake", Thelonious Monk.  He carved new territory in jazz, and I'd liken what he did to jazz (along with trumpeter Miles Davis) as similar to what Jimi Hendrix did to rock-- totally revolutionized the genre.

Enjoy!

A silver bullet with women is "The Birth of the Cool" by Miles Davis.  Norah Jones is perhaps the only thing better.

I enjoy Ray Bennett very much.  Thelonious Monk is an excellent recommendation as well.

No comparison needed, on account of the fact that Kenny G is, indeed, a clown.

Kind of Blue from Miles Davis is also a good one. Another pretty good one with ladies is Bill Evans.

I'm Duke Ellington guy...

I just can't really get into most modern jazz. I want it smokey, sweaty, and mixed with mind altering substances like alcohol.
