Charby, my dad's honeybee hives needed supplemental food last year, too.

It wasn't even that harsh a winter, compared to this year. 

He has them to pollinate his flower and vegetable gardens, as well as his fruit tree orchard.

Dunno why they got lazy, save for some variation of colony collapse disorder, but I sent him this link to try:

I lost this hive a few years ago. Yes one needed to feed last year, I started out with zero hives in the spring (my hives were dead in the winter) and I couldn't get any bees in the spring. I've already order bees for this spring so I'm going to try again.
