I just leaped from my seat, grabbed an improvised cudgel and ran into the hallway yelling "It's WAR!"

Gawd! (Or should I say "Mein Gott!") I'm old enough to remember what every Saturday at Noon there was a test of the emergency broadcast network. My father was in charge of coordinating attack alerts for our county, by virtue of his working for the telephone company and having been a Signal Corps officer in WW2. At Noon on Saturdays, EVERY radio station cut loose with a screeching tone best suited for a low-budget science fiction film, followed by an announcement that said something like, 'This has been a test of the national emergency broadcast system. If this had been an actual emergency, you would have received instructions to tune to a different frequency."

Simultaneous with the radio tones, every firehouse in the county (actually, in the country) cut loose with their sirens or horns or whistles, or whatever each fire department used to announce that they were going to be launching fire trucks imminently. All this cacophony went on unabated for one full, excruciating minute.

And now people are upset because they might get a message on their cell hones?

Around here it was (and still is) at 10am on Tuesday both sirens and TV/radio.  Although the Chicago FD sounded all their sirens back in 1959 when the Sox clinched the AL Pennant and scared the hell out of everyone.

I did the same as for the disaster drills at work:  run up and down the halls shrieking 'I don't want to die a virgin!'.  I get more action that way.

Huh, my company supplied iPhone 5s didn't get the alert.  Everyone else around me did.  I am disappoint.

*heh*

Our comm center has about a dozen iPhones for disaster failover for our phone system. Combined with the 10 or so personal cell phones, it was a helluva racket in here.....  :D

No alert...but an amber alert two states away at 3am? Haven’t missed one yet

The “Alertus” app that our work uses for sever weather/emergencies alert didn’t trigger either

I'm still blown away that  I got it. I was on  my way to a summit and still surrounded by peaks. I don't know where the hell the signal came from. Once I topped the summit and went no more than 100 yards down the other side, the signal was gone. Woulda missed my Trump-reich orders if I had started hiking 20min earlier.

That language was almost identical to what I used to get at fed.gov when we had continuity of operations drills (minus the presidential). I just got back to my condo so haven't looked up any lefty crazy talk yet. They have to be pretty disappointed at the innocuous language. I'm still betting that I'll easily find lots of  "off the deep end" comments.

I got it.  Phone didn't screech as loud or obnoxiously as it does for Amber alerts (which I immediately turned off after the first one because it was for hundreds of miles away)  I was hoping this one to include some generic Trumpism, like bigly or covfefe, without being silly or partisan.

According to this: http://www.city-data.com/towers/cell-Mammoth-Lakes-California.html there are 7 cell phone towers in that area.

I’m enjoying all the complaints about people being forced to accept “messages” on their phone from (insert various lefty names for Trump)! Many seem to actually believe Trump himself will be sending them messages on a regular basis or something and are freaking out.

That said, it’s stupid to call it a Presidential Alert. They should just call it an Emergency Broadcast like it is on TV’s and the Radio. It will be the same as the weather alerts and those amber alerts that show up on cellphones.

I think having it called the Presidential Alert is having the desired effect.

Didn't get any Presidential Alert, but I did get an earthquake soon alert around 2am; never felt it though as the center was much farther away. That will really wake you up though.

Phones are interesting in a cia in your pocket sorta way. I carry a Moto G4 with no service to use as a tool and wifi device. It gets the alerts. I now also occasionally use Google maps on it and I had assumed the phones were triangulating cell towers for the map. Well, I downloaded a map and headed off on a shortcut home. The damn thing was giving me very accurate turn by turn directions in Green Bank, WV where I assure you no cell tower reaches. GPS, pretty scary for a not activated Walmart phone.

I have my previous phone as a dedicated bathroom phone (Wi-Fi only). It was, apparently, sounding off for hours, until I acknowledged the alert (and took a loyalty oath).

Anyone know if tablets and readers are getting the alerts, too?

From what I can tell, they're all around 8000' or lower. There was a 10000' mountain between me and them. I must have gotten the signal after I broke 10K on the other end.
