Title: APS is...
Post by: grampster on December 02, 2005, 06:09:33 PM
an odd place inhabited by critters who have a commonality of faith in a timeless document.  The Constitution.  We have a unity in the belief that a few words define a way of life.

I came to the gunboards in 2000.  APS has come to be the neighborhood in which I live.  I have a great appreciation of the comments on TFL,THR, TAC etc.  But the camaraderie of daily life is here.  APS crosses all boundaries and tolerates the opportunity to discuss the vagaries of mankind, politely, in every direction.

There are not many of us who have registered.  What? Maybe 800 souls?  On a daily basis, our contributors are obvious and predictable (maybe) and new handles pop up daily.  (With dates of entry from the beginning).

The modern age may have ushered in some things that are objectionable, but at the same time the internet has opened up a new world.  None of us would have ever shared a thought except for Al Gore's invention.  Al, take a bow.

I appreciate the cameraderie, and maybe, at some point, many hundreds of us will have a Ronnyvoo, in some place where we can shoot guns, look at mountains, listen to water running and camp amongst the trees.  ( I didn't forget the beer...Or the tea and crumpets for sm)

Do I look British?  It is supposed to be Fried Apple Pies. I can do a Apple pie too. Black coffee, but I do non- sweet tea.  Yeah I know, Southern Folks are supposed to like sweetened. I'm a rebel, I can drink it un-sweet if I wanna.

Actually...at the moment...I'm
Sipping Twinings Irish Breakfast tea and munching on Baklava.   Who says I ain't cultured?

See if the coin had been heads I'da had to type something mushy like If'n warm weather sitting out back, plinking with .22's off the back porch. Cool temps, gathered around the fireplace , sipping coffee, and waiting for the call as to how the PETA meeting folks appreciated the meat deli tray we sent anon by cab...

Ain't cha happy it was tails??

Ewwww, gross.  I would suggest maybe depends or something Cheesy.

I like APS, when you can't post a thought or something that is weighing heavy upon your mind on the main boards then you know you can come here (as long as it's still civil but OT from firearms).

Everyone needs a place to vent or to speak their minds, etc..  Sure, TFL and THR are great for on topic issues but when a person has other issues they would like to discuss, it's nice to be able to come to a place that welcomes such issues and members that are helpful.

Just because a few make it annoying or try to use it for evil doesn't mean that it's a bad idea.  If that were the case then gun ownership in general should be banned/outlawed just because a few use them inappropriatly.

Gramps likes the place, as others, don't take it away or wish it away just because you think that it's a bad idea.

APS is my neighborhood pub.
You see the same folks, some are loopy (me) and some are helpful.  Some are cynical and some are sincere.
Some are just fun to watch, and have high 'entertainment value'.

It's a virtual Cheers.

Outsiders?
I'm frightened of the outside.
That's why I sit at home on my computer, on a Saturday afternoon, surrounded by guns, talking too you people.
Well, ok, I did spend the morning hitting the local gunshops, but still, that's hardly The Outside.

Dick - sound sentiments Smiley

I enjoy my occasional foray in here but - for most part time on THR and another gun board just take too much time, as it is.

It is good tho to still see a lot of folks I regard as friends from months - nay years, past.  Can't help wondering tho if Oleg's idea re ''outsiders'' will be a safe move - simply because of potential troll invasions and then a need for probably moderation to keep lid on.  Bit like enjoying a party full of invited guests but hell when gate crashers sneak in Cheesy
Title: APS is...
Post by: grampster on December 04, 2005, 05:31:03 PM
Chris,

I'm with you, and if Oleg is checking in, I second the motion.  It seems to me APS is more a place where those of us who value the good standards that built our country, can gather to wrestle with differing points of view. The polite exchange of ideas is the fodder of progress.   Learning how to make bisquits or making beer or looking at pics of old cars etc is a fine way to while away a winter evening, too.  For most of us, it seems, life is more complex than 9mm VS .45 cal and the minutiae of the gun culture.

The gun boards are as Oleg describes, a mission oriented forum.  I enjoy lurking mostly as I love to shoot 'em, but am not much caught up in the intricacies of making them go boom.  I just love the sound of gunfire, the smell of powder and the skill to makes that little piece of lead go where I pointed it.  I'm going to insert myself back into the hunting culture once my career is done.  (Soon Cheesy)

APS is the campfire where we come after leaving the range, so to speak.  I'd like to see more folks come over from THR or TFL.  Good conversation is hard to find without having to spar with trolls and agent's provocateur.

On the other hand, I'm not sure what Oleg means about "outsiders".  Does he mean promoting APS as a link on other boards?

PS:  I hope your family had a great Thanksgiving holiday.  A warm Merry Christmas I extend to you (and to all APS members, for that matter) and yours from the Clan Grampster.

I enjoy your photos from time to time.  One of these days I'll figger out how to phenegel (sp?) my equipment and show you the beauty of Michigan.

You get that small town feel, but we get educated too. I have learned more about history and literature here than I did in 16 years of public school and college.

There is more to responsible firearm ownership than firearms

I have used this quote often as many know, the origins...

labgrade , now passed, and I were communicating via telephone. We had been exchanging information about various matters, such as TRS, the political situation in respective states in regard to CCW and whatever else.

One of us said those words, we argued as to which one of us said it first - we gave each other credit. Then we wondered if perhaps Rich Lucibella had said them, someone else -anyone?  We did searches to find out. We never did find an author, so labgrade and I continued to give each other credit.

I'm suposed to take credit for them since lagrades passing...that is another story as to why.

labgrade is only one of MANY - whom I met thru TFL and later THR.  Like many, we do not always talk guns, the S&T, the L&P, we just need to visit with like minded individual.

It may be we need the input from someone in a profession, or we need input from someone in a region of the country in regard to hotels, vacation spots - or meeting up to have a meal, cup of coffee.

Re: Outsiders

I too am uncomfortable with 'outsiders'.  My first gut reaction is open forum needing moderating.  I'm uncomfortable with this definition personally.

I know many at THR did not approve of The Roundtable, even from its conception - including Staff. I respect this. I can even understand their point of view.  I admit I am not the best representative of THR, TFL or APS.

APS  members as it is now - we know each other. Akin to the folks working in a downtown area, they may know everyone - still comfortable enough to see them in the Coffee Shop on the corner. We talk about a lot of stuff, and perhaps even matters we would not to "strangers" - but the person that works in that building across the street - we may  not actually know his name, what he actually does in that bldg - is still 'one of us'.

---

I can vent here, I can get by with language to re-enforce my emotion on a matter, to gain tone and inflection if you will.

---

Now about training me on stuff ...'cultured' as it may expressed.  I do not watch TV , if I did I'd watch movies maybe, or training tapes....or educational tapes.  Now being with like minded folks , in someone's home watching a movie, yeah, I like that. I ususally end up with the family dog being my  bestest friend.

I would prefer to see a live Theatre show, instead of most movies.  Not some musicals, but some are classic.  I mean even I go to the Children's Theatre to see "Annie" with the red headed brat singing. "Annie Get Your Gun" , "Swiss Family Robinson"....and the last dinner Theatre show was "Pajama Tops".  My Micro Bio PhD Lab - a young lady whom finished HS at age 14 and I forget how young she got her PhD was in the Play.  She was surprised how folks like me liked the Theatre. I was really surprised how well she looked in a Teddy....I mean I was paying attention in class anyway with her wearing jeans, T-shirt and a ball cap...

Oh, cannot fool me - I have had some fine Southern Cooked foods in MN, PA WVA,MI  even Indiana.  8grin*  Ohio really needs to get their act together tho"...*smirk*.  Trying to explain to a Ohio native that the bun is supposed to be 'backwards' on a Patty Melt double cheeseburger, with double jalapeno cheese and jalapenos is a classic example of futility.  Do not ever ask if they ever make Sun Tea...deer in the headlight look all around.  Just what the hell is this putting butter on sandwiches anyway?  She put on the butter - then- added mustard and mayo to a ham sandwich.  We hang folks in the South if they do that...

Nope, this is my quaint coffee shop with my bunch.  Sometimes my diner with the juke box in the corner with some CCR or Segar playing.  Reminds me of a watering hole I used to go to  as well.

I still do communicate with folks off forum, via PM, Email Snail- Mail  and landline. I mean I have rec'd some great books from New Zealand, from a freind I met at THR. He wanted to learn some shotgunning stuff, and now we communicate about all sorts of stuff.

I keep up with families, and kids.  I get adopted 'online' sometimes. Latest was a person said thier kid was going to adopt me as an Uncle. That way the kid and them could blame me for buying stuff for the parents , under the excuse of the kid. Hey at 9 months the kid is not really into the train set, or the Red Ryder parents bought - but I get the blame so the parents can make sure the stuff works for when the kid gets bigger. Makes sense to me. Smiley

Well it's gettin on to 1AM and it's dark and cold here.  In the teens.  10 day forecast is for 20's, some wind, and snow showers daily.  The lake froze over for the 2nd time on Tuesday.  Looks like winter is here to stay till the January thaw.  Oldest son bought the two g'kids and his gal friend's son each an ice fishin' kit.  I'll be sitting in front of the slider next to the fireplace in another couple weeks, watchin them boys settin' up tip ups  for northern pike and jiggin' for crappie.  SWMBO'l heat up the grease and get out the Drakes and make up some slaw.  I think I'll be smelling fresh filets before too much longer.

If they're your friends then just un ban them then.  There is more forgiveness from the IRS than from those who love to ban people at THR and TFL.  Don't you think trigger happy and unforgiving bannings "compromise the effectiveness" of THR and TFL?  How about for Christmas give a general amnesty to those who have been banned (yes, one or two may have deserved it)?  Somehow I expect the National Firearms Act to be repealed before that ever happens though.

MA.com,
I've resisted rising to your bait on a number of occasions.  I've been reading your thread about getting banned.  I've also read a few of your posts when you have chosen to converse in a manner befitting your obvious wide interests.  Frankly, when you do that I've been much more interested in reading what you've had to say.

Simply put, it is much more edifying to converse with a person who is speaking in a normal tone over one who is amplifying his voice with a bullhorn or throwing firecrackers into the room to gain attention.

You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.  I've learned that lesson the hard way myself.  Maybe a few more years of seasoning will temper your need for bombast.

October 19.  10-19.  In old cop 10 signal lingo that's "No Traffic".  Perfect analogy.  No traffic in Art's high desert kingdom, except maybe a lead traffic jam downrange.  Plus Larry gets presents.  Works for me.

Dear Instructors,
Please excuse Steve from classes.
He is scheduled to run a Cannonball to the desert, shoot guns, chase lizards, attend a scorpion roundup.
Yeah he know the class stuff is online - knows he can do some stuff online - but gee willikers, not everyday a fella gets invited to make noise and blow stuff up!

Respectfully,
APS

Hey, I have already had to use the "dog will be eating my homework" , and " I will be locking myself out of the house" for Spring Semester.

I have to re-new my Res CCW and Attend Tulsa, seems I have another something to renew...forget.  Non Res Fl is not due for renewal until'07  Already told instructor  I had 'certs to renew".  "Thats cool - we can work around stuff, we are team now - we are stuck with each other until we finish CCNA 4"

The game plan for this Cisco stuff is - we have the same instructor throughout.  I can take the exams online if need be...special situations.

I know, I bet by then I will have some busted Cisco Routers we can shoot. That is class related - right?  I can bring old patch cords for lassos...I know where the big roll of Cat 5e is...

Cat 3 small enought to lasso a scorpion?  Cheesy

Steve

Just make a lasso out of a single strand. Could use the springs from the drive doors to make a little twitch up snare.

Yep! You hunt them like snipe and they taste like chicken!  Cheesy

I'll tell you one one thing, I see / here one more of them Short Fat dolls dressed in red wishing me stuff, I'm going be sure and snag it and not blink an eye when I shoot it with a slug.  "Mr. Bill" just thought he had it bad...

Always wanted to spend time in the desert. Folks share that is very unique. I have been giving the desert a lot of thought since this thread.

I don't have any NVG, still I would like to wander out and see what all goes on at night. Just real curious about some things. I used to work Graveyard, the day world differs from the night. I know this occurs in nature as well, as I have 'explored' my siurrounding at night. Just the desert intrigues me.

Where the heck does Art live?  If I have to bring ammo I might have to rent an 18 wheeler.  Smiley

I could be persuaded to cough up about 10K rounds of ammo, I guess.  And maybe a few bullet delivery devices...  Cheesy
