XP Professional: How to Turn Off AutoRun
« on: March 18, 2005, 04:59:52 AM »
I upgraded to XP Pro a while back. Now everytime I insert a game CD into the drive the darn thing auto runs.

This is driving me nuts. I hate and despise this feature. In W98 it was easy to turn off - just go to device control, find the CD drive and turn it off. Not so with XP.

I've found a place to tell it how to handle various types of media and selected the do nothing option for all types but still the darn things auto run.

I can hold down the shift key while inserting the CD and that works but one shouldn't have to do that.

Anyone know how to turn CD auto-run off with XP and willing to share the knowledge?

This site has some good info   http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
NOTE- Line 3 on the right is your answer
Run Regedit and then navigate to those key locations and make the changes.

or get something like tweakXP or tweak UI

You know, even with autorun turned on all you have to do is hold down the left shift button when inserting a disc and it will not autorun.

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
2. Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom
3. To disable automatically running CD-ROMs, change the Autorun value to 0 (zero). To enable automatically running CD-ROMs, change the Autorun value to 1.
4. Restart your computer.
