  • I spent a week in that town one night....
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Uhm, paywall?

But you can put the link into google and click on the first link.

But I can guess.   World coming to an end on account of budget woes and/or corruption.  This being Ill-i-noise.

Rauner Budget not only cuts to the bone, but also cuts bone.  Pretty much every Social Service is getting whacked.  Illinois is about $2.5 billion behind on it's bills.

Here's a better breakdown without all the "SKY IS FALLIN" rhetoric.

https://www.illinoispolicy.org/rauners-budget-a-line-item-breakdown/

After 12+ years of budget gimmicks, this is a truly balanced budget.  Which is why the liberals in this state have called him everything short of a babykiller.

Quote
When Democrats raised the state income tax in 2011, they said the additional tax money would ‘pay down Illinois’ backlog of bills, stabilize the state’s pension crisis and strengthen its economy.’ Back in 2011, the state’s backlog of bills was $8.5 billion. But after collecting more than $31 billion in higher taxes, Illinois still has approximately $5 billion in unpaid bills, more than $111 billion in pension debt and the weakest economy in the nation.

Chicago Public Schools:

Former CEO is being investigated by the FBI.  Which means another Chicago Pol is about to go to jail.
Also because of their credit rating downgrades to one level above junk, (same with the Illinois rating), the:

Quote
Investment bankers who entered into risky transactions with the Chicago Board of Education called debt swaps could demand payment of an estimated $228 million, documents the district filed with federal financial regulators show.  That possibility was triggered by the school system being hit with a dramatic downgrade in its credit rating last month.  As a result, the financial institutions can end the deals and demand termination payments within “two business days following notice of the amount payable,”

CPS has $174 million in reserves and another $227 in operating reserves.  If one investment bank calls its debt, it'll cascade and CPS will have no choice but to file BK.

I soooooo hope one calls their note(s) and pulls the entire rotting edifice down.  Simply because if they do, then Chicago would be forced to jump and help, pulling it into a death spiral.   Detroit here we come...

I'm pretty sure you meant to say "Road to Serfdom."

Well, there's always that conflict between liberalism then and liberalism nowadays.  No joking, that was pretty funny, if you take it in its modern sense.

Overthrowing a monarch may have been the worst thing the American .gov has ever done in terms of individual liberty. Representative .gov has enormous perverse incentives and always ratchets inexorably to the Left.

Wasn't it Ben Franklin that something to the effect of "The Republic will last until the people figure out they can vote themselves money from the Treasury."

That's a paraphrase of De Tocqueville I believe.

A phrase in usage since the ancient Greeks and probably before...

Meanwhile, in America we have the NSA illegally wiretapping everyone and the feds saying they are legally justified in killing American citizens on American soil without a trial if a "senior administration official" feels like it's important. Not to mention all of the banana republic democracies and their shenanigans.

Not to mention the fact that the Brit monarchy have been figureheads with approximately the same amount of legal power as Bono for much longer than anyone on this board has been alive.

The point being, keeping the monarchy didn't stop the Brits from having a representative government that ratcheted just as far left, just as fast as ours.

Do you think that the American revolution may have had some influence on that happening?

Do you think that the American revolution may have had some influence on that happening?

That is something I've often pondered. How do you think that happened, and what should have been done differently?
