Title: gun related and other good books.
Post by: jdoc on February 10, 2009, 10:15:13 PM
Hi APS per a friends suggestion I read Matt Brackens books awhile ago. I have read them more than once and am looking for something else to read. Amazon suggests unintended consequences but their prices are a bit high. Any other suggestions or any other sources for  unintended consequences where I don't have too forke over 50-300 dollars for a book. Open to all suggestions.

Huh. I paid $30 for Unintended Consequences by ordering it from a local bookstore (Waldenbooks)'

And it is a good read.

Buy it here from the publisher for $28.95. http://www.accuratepress.net/ross.html (http://www.accuratepress.net/ross.html)

Are the multi-hundred dollar copies the editions before he changed names?

It's a big, thick hardback book that's hard to put down.

I have a dilemma.  If I have that book in the house, I'll need to tear off the cover, lest I concur the wrath of Wife.  Yet if I do that, I'll probably be killed in my sleep by MicroBalrog's secret Israeli super-tactical hit squad of ultimate Wrath-of-G_d death.

What to do?   =)

Uh, the cover's just a dust jacket. The actual cover is simply black, with Ross's signature in gold and the title on the spine.

An excellent idea! My copy lacks the dust jacket. :D

Really? My wife read it at the same time as I did and didn't freak out about the cover.

Well, my wife's not "cool," I guess.     Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen the cover up close.  It may not be as racy as I think it is.

I honestly just don't understand what there is to freak out about. Does she not trust you, or is she hypersensitive or jealous about even pictures of other women, or...... Well, I can't really think of any other reasons she'd "freak out" about it. Can you maybe clarify what she would get so upset about?

I won't make assumptions about your wife, but I know my dad couldn't read a fishing magazine with pics of women in bikinis in them without my mom acting like it was hustler. They don't have a very healthy relationship....

John Ross changed his name, or the title of the book was changed?  I don't follow...  Please 'splain.

ETA:  More good books for the "angry" shelf:
The Federalist Papers and the Anti-Federalist Papers
Atlas Shrugged
The Fountainhead
Black Arrow
Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse

I remember hearing that in the first edition some of the characters who get killed off bore the names of RL people.

I know some of you will take this as a sermon of some kind.  It's just an explanation.  If you want to discuss it further, we could start a new thread.

I didn't say "freak out," and I was exaggerating a bit about the "wrath."  I would guess that my wife and I have different ideas than you do, about images of half-clad women, the significance thereof, and some related topics.  I don't regard it as unusual for a woman to prefer that her husband not have pictures of other women, in revealing clothing.  I think my wife in particular would be unhappy to find such a book cover on my shelf, as it would worry her.  As I said, I don't think that indicates trust issues or hypersensitivity.  To me, it just means she is a girl, and some girls are like that.  I understand a lot of guys would feel cramped by such an attitude.  I do not.

I am aware that, these days, people commonly regard such images as No Big Deal, and that to think otherwise indicates some kind of unhealthy prudery.  I happen to disagree.

None of which will keep me from reading the book one day, when I get around to it.  Maybe when I get it, I'll post on here, and see if anyone needs a new cover for their UC.   =)

The racinessness would be in the mind of my wife, actually.

I had a really stupendous comeback, but I wasn't trying to jack the thread.  Micro, if you'd like to explain how a buxom, topless blond is not racy, we should probably start another thread.

I'm willing to take any racy images that anyone needs to get off their hands.  It's a tough job, but somebody has to protect you guys from your wives.

Back to OP, I really like Edward Abbey.  Read "Fool's Progress".

Oh wait, it's a classic depiction of Lady Justice.

Oh, so a half-topless chick wearing a blindfold and holding a sword.  Nope.  Nothin' racy there.

For what it's worth, I think John Ashcroft was probably right.

On the book cover, you can't even see her bosom. You know she's topless, but you can't really see anything except her  left leg. Further, the context is entirely unsexual, unless you think having an MP5 shoved up your nose is erotic, in which case I don't think I can help.

Don't judge him for what he finds erotic. You just need to be more sex-positive.

You can see plenty of bosom.  If it were a picture of an actual event, yeah, it wouldn't be very sexual.  But when it's a staged photograph, the sexual overtones are intentional and obvious.  To deny that would be dishonest.  And for that matter, her "left leg" is pretty hawt.  If you are not properly stimulated by the female thigh, I can't help you.  :P

As to the OP's question:

I suggest Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrel. Its the true story of how Operation Redwing went horribly wrong. It was awesome.

If you're into military history, I would also suggest Inside Delta Force by Eric L. Haney. That tells about Delta's early days, their training, and their basic techniques.

Another good one is Navy SEALs: A History Part II by Kevin Dockery. Half the book is narratives from SEALs.

Welcome to the forum.

You will get more information if you start a new thread, with a title like "Looking for info on a S&W revolver," or something like that.

Sorry, I don't have any info on your gun.

Oh, wait, I see you just started a thread.
