Title: Jeremy Clarkson, Gentleman Farmer
Post by: RocketMan on June 11, 2021, 11:42:14 PM
It turns out that Jeremy Clarkson owns a beautiful 1000 acre farm in a very scenic part of England.  The gentleman that was running his farm retired last year.  Clarkson, in his inimitable way, decided that he can run the farm.  After all, how hard can it be.  Especially after he buys a Lamborghini R7 tractor.  Yes, there is hilarity.  And some hard lessons.
Season 1 of "Clarkson's Farm" is an original series airing now on Amazon Prime.

Watched the first two episodes last night.  Laughed out loud a bunch.  Clarkson knows how to entertain.

It's too big.

I binged it all yesterday. Great stuff. A somewhat softer side of Jeremy Clarkson, but it just shows why I've liked him so much. He's a big ahole, but with a heart.

As the series progresses, the program is drifting away from its comedic reality show beginnings and showing how important farming has become to Clarkson.  He is certainly becoming more serious about everything related to it.  And his interactions with the farm staff are showing a more human side of him.
It still has its funny moments where Clarkson comes up with one of his brilliant, impractical or unworkable ideas.  He still crashes and burns for the camera on occasion.

Didn't know Lamborghini made tractors.  They looks like typical modern farm tractors one sees around here.

Yep, the tractor business came first (1948 according to Wiki).

There is a (probably false) story that Ferruccio Lamborghini's decision to build sports cars was motivated in part by rude treatment he received from a Ferrari dealer.

I just watched the first two. As a half-assed farmer myself, I appreciate his predicaments.

I like that he mentioned that Amazon insisted he make the show diverse, but that all there was at the equipment auction was 60 year-old white guys.

In the final episode of season 1, Jeremy gets reacquainted with his Diddly Squat Fast Response Vehicle.  He gets to drive something other than farm equipment.  Pretty cool for a couple of minutes.

Here is the review I gave Clarkson's Farm on Amazon.  (Reviews are currently running at 97% five stars on Amazon, and 9.3/10 on IMDB.)

Quote
I've seen Jeremy Clarkson in both the Top Gear and The Grand Tour programs. He has always come across as an irreverent, comedic jerk. That persona has worked for him in both of those programs because he is cast opposite his friends James May and Richard Hammond. They play off of each other in a marvelous fashion, making for some very enjoyable television.
Now Clarkson has bought a farm, and Amazon has made a reality TV series out of his trying to operate it successfully. Honestly, I didn't really expect the program to be very good. Clarkson is completely out of his element, knowing zip about farming, one of the most difficult professions on the planet. He does battle with the weather, outrageous British laws and regulations, recalcitrant sheep, thieving otters, stinging honey bees, and crops that he knows nothing about growing.
He performs honest physical labor day in and day out, makes difficult and sometimes agonizing decisions, struggles incessantly with nasty surprises brought about by his lack of knowledge, and yet finds real joy in what he is doing.
The supporting cast are real people doing the real jobs necessary to run the farm, and Jeremy surprisingly seeks out their advice and respects their knowledge. We are seeing a completely different side of Clarkson, one much different from that portrayed on Top Gear and The Grand Tour.
Clarkson's Farm is at times funny, irreverent, serious, poignant, sad, triumphant and joyful. It is great television, and I genuinely hope Amazon signs on for a second season.

When I was a kid, the adults worried that we had named The Steer.

We named it "T-Bone."

Farm kids know about things that city people likely would have nightmares over... I wish I had our old sharpening wheel - hand cranked, about 24-30" in diameter, 4" across...

Oh, and I don't like sheep, or mutton, a whole lot either.

Pigs were okay when someone else raised them. We'd trade beef for pork.

I'm on episode five, and holy crap, man - how do you get anything done in Britain? It appears you need government permission to open your front door and take a step outside.

I can't believe Clarkson is anti-Brexit. You would think he'd be for it, dealing with all the EU crap.

Clarkson is a big Francofile.  He has a house or two in France.  Brexit probably hurts his travel.

Watched the first episode last night.  I was a little put off by his genuine surprise that there are skills involved in farming, but it's still a funny show.  I even felt a tiny bit sorry for him for picking the year with biblical flooding to start learning.

Just watched the first episode.

I liked it, the wife was not so into it because she doesn't like how Clarkson comes across.

She didn't like him on TG either and for the same reason.

I had to keep explaining to her that the arrogant, loud-mouthed, know-it-all incompetent is a character. And that we're supposed to learn from him.

His doing it so obviously wrong gets us invested in wanting to see it done right. That way we learn something while laughing at this total goof-ball.

On TG it was James May who was the sensible, competent one on this show it's Caleb.

And Caleb is magnificent. At 21 he is vastly more skilled and useful than the majority of the population of any age group.

The world would get along fine without people like Clarkson, but we'd all die real quick if it wasn't for folks like Caleb.

My wife does like Caleb so she'll keep watching so she can watch him.

So we're in for the whole run of the season.

I just finished watching the final episode. I was cracking up at the Goodfella's reenactment at the beginning.

It was overall a fun series to watch. I have had a heck of a time finding anything new that I want to watch these days, so thanks for the recommendation, Rocketman. If you hadn't posted about it here, I likely would have never seen it.

I'm two episodes into the second season and am greatly enjoying myself.  Looking at some episode title and descriptions, I'm worried it's going to derail from the comedic farming educational to and endless foray into local politics and regulations... You know, like real life.   :police:

I think I mentioned during Season 1 that I couldn't for the life of me figure out how any farmers in the UK get anything done. You need a permit for everything all the way to fish farts.

Season 3 is filming now.  There was concern that Amazon would be ending all projects with Mr. Clarkson after his column in The Sun regarding Meaghan Markle.

Awesome to hear. They can make crappy shows like Hell's Kitchen run like 15 seasons, so I hope we can get at least 5 out of Clarkson's Farm.

Based on this, I wonder if The Grand Tour will also continue?  It would make sense if season three of Clarkson's Farm is being shot now.

From some dialogue in S2E1, I'm getting the impression that season 2 was in the can over a year ago. This thread started not quite a year ago for Season 1. Do they release this in Europe first maybe?

Word is the took a while to exit this one.  I think they wanted to portray a particular viewpoint on the relationship between farmers and the UK government. Took it a bit to get just right.

Also this was the 2021 into 2022 season. I think the actual filming didn't end until mid summer/ early fall 2022. Then post production.

FWIW I totally agree. Season 2 was great, and made me laugh quite a bit.  The bit with the cows and the ratchet jack had me honestly worried and on the edge of my seat.

I would however be having Pepper Steak if I were in Jeremy's shoes. ;)

Yeah, I’d have offered the farmer a chance to trade for a fertile female so his kid could have her favorite back, but if not then Pepper steak it is.

Finished season one.

I just about fell off my chair when Clarksons says "I could go back to London."

And Kaleb breaks in and says "Yeah, do that! Just do that!"

There was a very interesting moment, though, earlier in the show when the weather was still being a big problem, the sheep were being a big problem, just everything was being a big problem, and Clarkson says as an aside "I don't think I've ever been this happy."

His partner brought that up again at the end of the last show, and it was all part of that "I could go back to London."

Thought it was very interesting.

We started watching Season 3 last night.  Got through a couple episodes.  I still really enjoy this show.

I did turn to Mrs. Mush most of the way through Episode 1 and say "If I were Clarkson I'd hire a couple lawyers whose only job is to sue the council and mire them in paperwork when they try to do ANYTHING.  Good, bad, whatever.  Just make everything impossible"

While recognizing that this is a semi-scripted TV show, I think they covered something like that in Season 2, but the attorney fees were even too much for mega-rich Jeremy.

I don't know how anyone gets anything done in the UK. The town council is the face of it, but all the farming rules from the UK government are just brutal.

One of the things I really like about this show is how it manages to be entertaining, but also shines a stark light on just how *expletive deleted*it upon the people that make our food really are.  I can't imagine the US is much better.

I'm only a half assed farmer, but have firsthand knowledge between farming in Idaho and farming in Calif (via the guy my parents leased to). On the fed level, it's really not that bad. Yet. I've dealt with USDA/NRCS in Idaho and they have been super friendly and helpful. Deep state progressives certainly want to change that, especially at the White House level and agencies like the EPA. We've all seen the EPA lawsuits of six figures per day against farming families because rain created a pond/watershed/wetland and suddenly it became a "federal waterway".

California was getting ridiculous before I moved. One of the reasons my parents' renter paid so much per acre to rent their land and grow corn and wheat, besides feeding his cows (he owned a big dairy) was that it was the only way he could keep from going broke removing manure from his dairy. CA declared it a hazardous material, so if you hauled it off, it had to go to Nevada and it cost a fortune to both transport and dump it. There was still a loophole that if you spread it on your land as fertilizer, that was okay. So dairy guys ended up leasing land more to have a place for their manure than to grow crops.

Here in Idaho, my dealings with the state have pretty much boiled down to, "What are you even calling us for? Do whatever you want. What do we care?". That's kind of been changing though, even in just the 5.5 years I've been here, because of the quickly increasing population.

I did a land split last year that took most of the year, and almost every time I went to the county building for paperwork I saw a new sign on the wall about a new regulation. Stuff like "Engineered drawings now required for agricultural outbuildings" (you used to be able to just put up the building as long as it was a barn or for equipment storage or whatever) or "permits now required for woodstoves".
