Hey Gewehr98...
« on: September 15, 2008, 04:21:57 PM »
Look what I got.  It's an Eimac 4PR1000A

I have two.  Dunno if they work.  They were part of a "Mystery Box" raffle at my radio club meeting tonight.  Also got a bunch of misc components (diodes, resistors, etc).

Film canister for scale.

Sweet!

Are you going to mod your transmitter to incorporate them?  grin

Although they're designed for something different, I know of a couple tube audio amps that were built using those monstrosities.

Yup, a high-power HF-output tube used in an audio amp.  And I thought all my Svetlana 6550s warmed up the living room on cool evenings!  shocked

I just sold a new-in-box pair of those Eimacs on eBay a few months ago.  Wish I'd known you were in the market for some...

I'm not in the market for them or any tubes.  They came in the "mystery box" that was raffled off tonight.

One is definitely dead, it has loose filaments floating around.  I'll probably put it on a block of wood in my workshop.  The other will probably go back into the mystery box for next week...or not. Smiley

Did you get a bottle of grid leak bias to go with that?

Aww, don't put it back in the box.

Make a filament power supply for it (think 6-volt wall wart), and turn it into a night light.  Use one of those day/night photocell wall outlet switches so it only runs at night.  (Been there, done that...) Cheesy

Yeah, but this nerd enjoys the sound of filaments, plates, and grids - in nearly every room of the house, save for the commode.  (Thinking about that, too...)   grin

When my grandfather died in 2003, he had tons of tube and HAM stuff. (Engineer for Kearny & Trekker, IFR Flight Instructor, homebuilt planes etc...)

One of the things I should have grabbed was one of his older osilioscopes. I really had no use for one, but I never imagined someone would make this either:

Check out what this kid did with a C program to encode waveforms beyond hearing range and just ran it through his soundcard! R-L into X-Y!

Holy....

From the comments, he's just a kid/teen too, which makes me feel stupid. Granted, I've been with women, and had kids...  cheesy but still... stupid.  undecided

I actually bought this kit:

http://www.cathodecorner.com/

I even bought the proper o-scope cathode ray tube.

I just haven't assembled it yet, because I wanted to build it in a clear acrylic case.

Then, of course, the designer came up with this variant:

Steampunk for me is kind of "meh", I run hot and cold on it. Some of it is cool, much is simply absurd.

30's, 40's, 50's, and even 60's and 70's "Retro-Future" is what does it for me. Taking the old tech and putting it as the "face" or UI for modern guts is cool. At least in the electronic era, many people had visions of what would be possible, and wished their hardware could do it.

I promise not to duck.

This is fitting.
I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

Hmmm... nice looking stereo.

I don't own any tube stereo equipment... but i own several tube guitar amplifiers.

Including a Carvin V3 with Ruby EL34 BSTRs in it...

AND, a 30 year old RCA 12AX7 driving the gain in the preamp :-)

only bummer is: it's the only one i have.... when it goes out, it's back to new manufactured tubes :-(

/sigh

Nothin like the glow of hot tubes on a stage to get your guitar-muscles pumping.
