Apparently, from the article, the "palatable" downside is that the capsules need to be acid resistant (to ensure they make it all the way to the gut?), and thus clear. I'm unsure if them being clear is a materials issue or an identification issue. Perhaps the med folks can elaborate.

Maybe adding colorant or the ability to make colorant bond reduces the acid resistance?

Fill the clear capsule.  Dip it into a opaque solution that's NOT acid resistant.  The colorant/concealment dissolves in the stomach, the clear part does it's thing and gets the payload to the gut.

Yeah, the capsule is probably the least of other bad options.  If I ever need one, I hope they don't tell me what is in the pill before I take it.

Not seeing an incredible amount of selectivity there.  Still, I believe the research is 'ongoing', in that they're trying to ID what the 'best' mix is.

Today, in NEJM, the CDC published data showing the incidence of C. diff infections in 2011, and things have probably gotten worse since then.  It is occurring more often then we suspected.

I was a donor!!   Sis had recurrent C. diff, unresponsive (can't remember the medical term) to normal treatment. Her son tried to donate but was too uptight (get it?). Anyway, after testing for Hep & AIDS I was cleared to donate. "Need a laxative?" "Nah, Raisin Bran for breakfast and I'll get you a good, ah, specimen!"

We're killing off way too much bacteria! We've all heard of women (especially) getting yeast infections after being on antibiotics. The yeast was always there, but bacteria kept it in check until we killed the bugs off!
