"Field Humidor"`
« on: January 10, 2007, 05:26:32 PM »
Well the experiment seems to be a success.  I took the paper towel and soaked it a little more with water and put the extremely dry "Cubans" in the bag and they have seemed to been revived.  I will attempt to smoke one later today after work and see if they smoke any better.  More to follow.

They make small, portable travel humidors for $15 or $20.  I can't imagine the plastic bag contraption being anywhere near as useful as one of those.

You're deployed to Iraq right now, aren't you?

I did the ziplock thing many times in the past. Works wonders on cigars on revitalatization!

Used to get pissed higher than a kite at happy hour, then buy a bottle and cigars after happy hour and forget about the cigars and leave them on the dash of my truck. I never forgot about the bottle, but come Monday AM the cigars would be dryer than a popcorn fart. I miss the freedom of those days but I don't miss the everything else.

Yes I am in Iraq and I am looking at purchasing one of those small travel humidors to hold a dozen or so.  It was that I purchased a few Cubans from a local merchant and they were dried out due to not being in a humidor.  So I ask the large and knowledgable crowd here at APS on a "field expiedent" method of reclaiming dried out cigars before I had the oppurtunity to purchase one.  And as epected the group here did not let me down.

Anything you guys need or want, you let us know. I already know of a local cigar shop I could probably talk into donating a few cigars. They have a "Donate cigars to the troops" box and every time I see it there's quite a few in there. If you don't want to post your address here PM me. Of course, they won't be Cubans.   sad

Unfortunatly even if there was  a suitable stand-in that would get someone into a bit of trouble.

I'd be happy to send you one.  It's the least I could do for someone who's serving my country.  PM me if you're interested.  I'll be out of town for a few days so I won't be able to respond immediately.  But leave me a message and we'll work something out.

A decent cigar box with a little long, narrow humidifier will work.

I had the same problem when I was there, only with pipe tobacco. I just had small amounts sent over frequently, but that's definitely a good idea.

So where are you at incountry? Feel free to PM if you don't wanna say on the open boards.

I saw these portable plasic ziploc bag type humidors at the cigar store today that are supposed to be good for 6 months. Would those help?

BTW, in reference to the cigar store: SCORE!! You'll be reaping the bennies in short order. I done real good. grin

A few years back, one outfit was marketing a wood-lined ammo can... However, since ammo cans tend to be a bit chemically funky, I'd probably avoid that...

What I did:

Igloodor! Got a six-pack cooler that closed decently (those fliptop things aren't anywhere near airtight), and that's the home of cigars in Bogie's Bunker.

They arrived today.  Thank you.  Already started passing the box around.  My CO was the first one to get one and then Top was the third.

And as for the "field" humidor, while it did seem to re-hydrate the dry cigars I had the first one I have tried had dried out so much that it was cracked and turned out to be unsmokeable.  Is unsmokeable even a word?  Anyway at least I know that it will keep fresh ones fresh and if not too far gone can revive a dead one.

Your welcome, my pleasure. Cool too cause that didn't take too long at all. I'll check in with him periodically and see if he's accumulated any more. Would you be interested in one or two of these "portable humidors"? They're basically a heavy duty ziplock bag with a gel pack to hold moisture. They have different sizes that hold any where from 6 cigars to 60 IIRC. They're supposed to hold cigars for 6 months.

Take care!

Wouldn't mind trying one of those portable humidors.  I have seen them also and wondered as to if they were worth the effort.

That has been done.  The problem is that some were just too much of a crackly.  As for being legal to send to APO's, I would have to know what you are asking about.  There are certain items that are banned in certain locations so as not to offend the LN.  For example we cannot have alcohol or porn to name a couple here in Iraq.  Other items cannot be mailed due to postal regulations such as cans of shaving cream or gel or other pressurized items.

I can tell you for a fact that Cigars are ok to send (I told the postal guy that's what was in there, and put it on the customs form), but lighters are a no-no.  Also, matches are a no-no.  I knew about the lighters, but the matches was a new one to me.  The package was already wrapped and taped....so....I forgot they were in there?

Actually Maxim and Stuff are allowed over here.  Can even buy it in the PX.  But then I cannot get my monthly allotment of T,A and MC (Tits, ass and Motorcycles).  No Easyriders.  Basically if it shows anything that cant be shown on "normal," commercial, broadcast TV networks then we can't have it overhere.  But being soldiers there are always loopholes.  And that is all I have to say about that.

Questions for you if you're still out there. I know nothing about cigars. Were those any good? Were the tubes sealed with original contents or had he just taken loose cigars and empty tubes and put them together. Just curious.

Good cigars don't come in those cheesy tubes.
