So, do I not understand the process, or is Ms. Sheehan simply lying?
You understand the process.
There is no way anyone can know anything about the deliberations of the committee. No outsiders are present, and there is no record, written or otherwise, kept during the committee meetings.
I'm not an "expert" on the Nobel Committee, but most of what I do know, was explained to me in person by the committee's secretary and a former (then current) committee chairman. As far as name-dropping goes, I imagine this makes me about as popular around here as if I claimed to be the illegitimate love-child of Kim Jong Il.
Perhaps there's been a small shift in values for the Nobel committee?
The committee's members change every few years. I think they have made some very bad choices in the past, but for the most part the fact that some people dislike the choice just means that they're doing the job. This kind of prize is after all political by nature. If you get your shorts in a knot over it, it's your problem. The most vehement "protests" usually come from such charming places as Iran or Burma or China.
Mannlicher, the Peace Prize has excactly as much meaning as you put in it. It's a free world, sort of. That particular prize is however handed out by left wing
Norwegian enemies of America...
By the way, I have no idea who that Sheehan-person is. Don't waste your time telling me, if I wanted to know, I'd google her...
