Cindy Sheehan Nobel Finalist?
« on: October 12, 2006, 12:58:40 PM »
I just saw a story where Cindy Sheehan said that she's a finalist for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I always thought that the information about who was nominated and under consideration was a secret, and the only person you'll ever hear about from the Nobel committee is the one actually awarded the prize.

So, do I not understand the process, or is Ms. Sheehan simply lying?

m1911owner, you just misunderstood. Ms. Sheehan is a finalist for the Noble GAS prize, for her experiments with superheated helium.

Why not give her one? The nobel peace prize has turned into the 'most rabid socialist' prize years ago.

You must've heard wrong-they were probably discussing the IgNobel prizes.

I hate to bring this up, but (Sorry, Art) the news came from one of the teevee stations in Austin, TX, also known as Berkely on the Colorado.

She's in the running like the Wobblies are in the running for the Nobel Prize in Economics.

That's MOSCOW on the Colorado!!

Let's do a quick spot check on Peace Prize winners over the past couple of decades . . .

In 1993 & 1994, the Peace Prize was awarded to terrorists Nelson Mandela and Yassir Arafat.

In 2001, it was awarded to Kofi Annan and the UN. (I guess the judges appreciate the peaceful rape of children by UN peacekeepers).

In 2002, it was given to Jimmy Carter. (Main qualification is that he's an anti-American activist.)

In 2004, it was given to Wangari Maathai, who stated that HIV was a bioweapon unleashed by "western powers" to kill black people.

In 2005, Mohammed Elbaradei got it for providing "cover" for Islamofascist nuclear weapon development.

So it's not impossible for Cindy Sheehan to be under consideration.

Anyway, the 2006 prize went to Muhammed Yunis and the Grameen Bank, so I guess Crazy Cindy will have to wait another year . . .

Funny, this year the Prize went to a banker, who has worked to extend small loans to the poor of Bangladesh.  Perhaps there's been a small shift in values for the Nobel committee?

Sylvi, I voted with my feet some 23 years ago, leaving Austintatious.  WRT city government, it was obvious that the inmates were running the asylum.  Some things just don't get better with age.

Art, notice my .sig line . . . and I'm not actually inAustin, living in a suburb west of the city.

But I'm starting to feel as if I were . . . originally, my congressman was Ron Paul, perhaps the BEST congresscritter in the U.S. House.

After redistricting, I got Lamar Smith as a congressman - not bad, not bad.

But this year, after some idiot judges (a redundancy, to be sure) redrew the borders, I find I'm in a little splinter of (groan) Lloyd Dogget's district. :barf:

So I have NO representation in the U.S. House.

thankfully she did not win.  I seriously doubt that her name was even in the hat.
The Nobel Peace Prize has little meaning anyway.  For many years, it has been handed out by left wing Swedes to enemies of America anyway.  With the likes of Peanut Jim, Yasser Arafat, Kofi Anan, Mohamed ElBaradei and others of the same ilk.  In my humble opinion, the prize is berift of credibility.

You understand the process.

There is no way anyone can know anything about the deliberations of the committee. No outsiders are present, and there is no record, written or otherwise, kept during the committee meetings.

I'm not an "expert" on the Nobel Committee, but most of what I do know, was explained to me in person by the committee's secretary and a former (then current) committee chairman. As far as name-dropping goes, I imagine this makes me about as popular around here as if I claimed to be the illegitimate love-child of Kim Jong Il. Cheesy

The committee's members change every few years. I think they have made some very bad choices in the past, but for the most part the fact that some people dislike the choice just means that they're doing the job. This kind of prize is after all political by nature. If you get your shorts in a knot over it, it's your problem. The most vehement "protests" usually come from such charming places as Iran or Burma or China.

Mannlicher, the Peace Prize has excactly as much meaning as you put in it. It's a free world, sort of. That particular prize is however handed out by left wing Norwegian enemies of America... Smiley

By the way, I have no idea who that Sheehan-person is. Don't waste your time telling me, if I wanted to know, I'd google her...

Would that be the love-child with Jane Fonda or Rosie O'Donnell? It's important that we know exactly what kind of beast you are.

There is no such thing as a Nobel Peace Prize finalist. This isnt the publishers clearing house. Even the list of nominees is confidential. The only name released is the name of the winner.

So, it sounds like she is indeed lying through her teeth.  I suppose that shouldn't surprise me, but I would have though that even a nearly-total lunatic would have enough sense not lie about something where it is so trivial to see that they are telling a bald-faced lie.  I mean, at least make sure that you can quibble about what the definition of "is" is.

HankB, Lloyd Dogget was part of why I left Austin.  Dunno if you were around during the "Killer Bees" deal when he was in the Legislature, first the House and then the Senate.  If he had a voice in the Nobel selection process, I've no doubt he'd nominate Sheehan.

For some fun commentary about her, go to the LawDog files blog and search the archives about Cindypoo and her "hunger strike".

I grew up out on Manchaca Road, in the house that's now 9000 (Used to be Route 5, Box 102.)  Slaughter Lane was our south boundary.  My deer hunting pretty much ended when they built Castlewood Forest subdivision.  Oak Hill was a little separate town on the old two-lane Fredericksburg Highway until after LBJ's reign brought federal money and people into Austin.
