Boberg XR9.

Winner! That was quick. Have you seen one of these?

Today was the first I'd even heard of this gun. It is interesting in a mechanical-function sense, but I have no desire to own one. It does shoot pretty well, but it slapped my trigger finger hard.

How was felt recoil?

It is a small 9mm, so the recoil is sharp, but not too bad. The worst part is the trigger guard would hit my trigger finger.

The owner says it shoots accurately, but I didn't shoot for groups. It has very good sights. It is a double action only, hammer fired pistol with a rotating-lock barrel. Very neat mechanical device.

One big drawback: the gun does not like non-crimped ammo. In fact, the non-crimped ammo gets disassembled by the gun. I saw it yesterday. A guy fired one shot and the gun jammed up because the bullet of the next cartridge was pulled free.

Today is day two of this class, so I might get to shoot it again.

Just FYI, the lightweight revolvers are famous  for this as well. Heads slide out, stick out the front of the cylinder and jam it.

i would love to see how the action works.  i am assuming the round slides back, then forward to chamber it?  is there a space saving feature, or other benefit from this?  what is non crimped ammo?

Longer barrel in a pistol that is the same OAL as many other pocket guns out there, giving you a bit more in accuracy and I guess a few fps more.

Absolutely. Private innovation in firearms is rare enough I want to encourage it.

True, but this happened while that cartridge was being chambered. When the cartridge is in the mag, the rear of the case sits in the "grabber." When the slide cycles, the grabber pulls the cartridge out of the mag, then pushes it into the chamber as the slide goes forward. Sort of a controlled feed action.

Does this mean that Bobergs are starting to ship? Last I heard, it was vaporware, wasn't it?

They've been shipping for a while now.  Not in great numbers, but they're out there.

Interesting, but way too pricey for me.

One big drawback

Another quirk, so I read, is that the slide doesn't latch open after the last round is fired.  If you think about it, this has to be the case with this kind of feed.

(Speaking of interesting guns, not half an hour ago I saw a Colt .38 Auto, probably (by the looks of it) one of these.  The dealer said it was a 1908, but nothing looks right in the image search.)

IIRC, by having a straight feed, the chamber can be just a little bit tighter, reducing the gas loss at the breech. Probably a pretty minor effect, but Arne tried to maximize velocity out of this package, and every little bit helps.

There's an animation of the action here:   http://www.bobergarms.com/video/boberg-xr9-patentpending-feed-1

Interesting, clever design.  A little on the complex side.....I wonder how subject to failure that "grabber" thingie is.
I haven't checked out the price but it sounds as if it might be more than is in my wallet. ;/

There's a review of it here, http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2012/07/eric-nelson/boberg-xr9-s-review-part-deux/ Sounds like an interesting design. I'll probably pick one up sometime just because of that.

According to the Boberg arms website pre-orders are $995.

Surprised somewhat to hear about the recoil/trigger finger bite.  I would have thought that the mechanical action would soak up some of the recoil.

The guns are shipping, obviously.

According to the owner, the felt recoil is less than that of a J-frame.
