Title: Aw Trump, You Were Doing So Well on the Twitter
Post by: Ben on July 14, 2019, 07:48:32 PM
And then you did this:

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-targets-four-freshman-house-members-pelosi-in-sunady-tweet-storm

The dems were nicely tearing themselves apart this week, and now he's given them and others a rally point that reduces the fun in-fighting that has been going on, with people (democrats even!) finally rising up against "the squad". He was doing so well on the tweets this week too, even supporting Pelosi against "the squad". Now everybody is rallying around the mean girls again. All he had to do was to sit back and watch. Oh well.

They definitely will. This will just be added to Trump's barrel of twitter gaffs and forgotten.  I just hated to see all the momentum this week go to waste.

I've stopped thinking that Trump's choices were just him being unable to control himself.

Did you see the polling on the "squad" over the weekend? AOC has a HUGE amount of name recognition (73%) and only something like 17% had a positive impression of her.

One of the others (Talib, I believe) had only a 53% name recognition, and a NINE% (I spelled it out because it's so abysmal) positive impression.

He's raising their profile and, yes, stopping the infighting, because he wants THEM to be the face of the Democrats.

It's possible this is all just by chance, but it works out in his favor far too often for me to believe that, anymore.

Good points.

I believe it's Omar that had the 9%. Deservedly so. It's also important to point out that, IIRC, that was a poll of Democrats specifically.

I do continue to think that the more "the squad" puts themselves in the news, the better it is for Trump 2020. Pelosi is right that it's their twitter following that's big, not their national following.

Much better:

Quote
"When will the Radical Left Congresswomen apologize to our Country, the people of Israel and even to the Office of the President, for the foul language they have used, and the terrible things they have said," Trump tweeted Monday. "So many people are angry at them & their horrible and disgusting actions."

He continued: "If Democrats want to unite around the foul language & racist hatred spewed from the mouths and actions of these very unpopular & unrepresentative Congresswomen, it will be interesting to see how it plays out. I can tell you that they have made Israel feel abandoned by the U.S."

I don't really see any problem with Trump's original tweet.  He wasn't wrong and it is far from the worst thing he has ever put out on Twitter.  If there is anything I wonder about is he was sort of inserting himself into a Pelosi/AOC catfight.  I think he had his reasons.

Interesting realization I just had.

The "Squad" is apparently 4 freshman congresswomen, who have "large followings".

Ok, I can name 3: AOC, Talib, and Omar. Who is #4? I'm assuming it's the Representative AOC referenced in her tweet as being able to speak spanish (and it's amusing that obviously means AOC doesn't), but I have no idea who she is, where she represents, or what kind of "following" she has.

Is she the mean-girl hanger-on in the clique?

Zero name recognition on that. You could literally be making up the name.* Still no idea where she represents or why she's in the "Squad". (Other than she must be some version of "of color" because that's the only important thing in the modern left identity politics.)

*(I'm not saying you are, I'm just saying it's not even an "OH!!! That's who it is.")

An example of why she's in the squad:

Quote
Rep Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) “We don’t need any more brown faces that don’t want to be a brown voice. We don’t need black faces that don’t want to be a black voice. We don’t need Muslims that don’t want to be a Muslim voice. We don’t need queers that don’t want to be a queer voice”

Looks like Pelosi is calling for a congressional resolution specifically against Trump's tweet, and specifically naming him. Kinda the opposite of what she did with Omar's racist comments.

Maybe Trump did know what he was doing with that tweet...

He's putting faces to names for the people on the right that didn't vote for him last time.  He's pointing out exactly who the enemy is, what they stand for and making the left (Pelosi and the rest) stand up and defend them.  I think it's great.

That is sort of what I just heard talked about on the radio.  Socialism is polling poorly among even Democrats.

One comment I heard was that Trump doesn't always win the news cycle, but he has a very good track record for the long game.  That is why I stopped worrying about what he is tweeting or saying.  9 times out of 10, he has a reason for doing it and it really doesn't matter to me (no force of law or official record).  Is he playing 4D Chess?  I don't know about that, but his opponents are playing checkers.

Trump pretty much doubled down on his comments at a press conference today.  (I guess this was linked in the twitchy thread)

1.  I love that he almost never runs away from his previous comments.
2.  The border is a winning issue.
3.  He mentioned the economy last and I think that is a winning issue also.

Yeah. People can call it 4-D OODA loop chess (with or without sarcasm) but it's fascinating how often he bucks conventional wisdom and comes out on top.

In early 2017, a Never-Trump friend of mine said Trump was foolish to start a war on words with those who buy ink by the barrel. Rather dumbfoundedly, I pointed out to him that Trump had just won the U.S. Presidency by doing that very thing.

Trump keeps his name in the news.  Democrats and the News media (but I repeat myself) are always reacting to what he is doing.

The basic thing is that people vote their wallets.  And right now, most peoples wallets are full with money from their paychecks.  Trump is pointing out that that money will disappear if any of the democrats are elected and on the need for Republican Congress.  Especially on the issue of the border.  Other than in liberal enclaves, most people see the border as a problem and Congress not doing anything to fix it.

He knows that if you throw a pact of hungry dogs a bone they often will start tearing each other apart for it. This applies to both politicians and the media.
There are times when I think he understands both far better than the either knows themselves.

Apparently I need to go back to grammar school for remedial vocabulary lessons. For many years, I have labored under the misapprehension that the term "racial" had something to do with race. According to Reuters, that's not the case.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-poll/republican-support-for-trump-rises-after-racially-charged-tweets-reuters-ipsos-poll-idUSKCN1UB2UD

It seems that if you tell someone who publicly expresses hatred for the United States to get out, -- with no mention of their race -- that's nonetheless a "racist" comment.

Good to know. I'll file that for future reference.

What I'd like to know is why are all 4 of the women involved considered to be POCs, meaning People Of Color?

AOC herself appears to have a paler complexion than a great many people of 100% European extraction, and Tlaib isn't extremely dark, either.

Both - especially AOC - certainly look more (drum roll . . . wait for it . . . ) Caucasian than Negro or Oriental on my TV.

Maybe it's the Rachel Dolezal / Elizabeth Warren racial identity of convenience effect . . .

For some reason, people of Hispanic descent seem to be considered to be "People of Color." (They are also classified as "Hispanic" for ethnicity, rather than European -- something that really, REALLY irritated my late South American wife.) Her attitude was that her family came from Spain centuries back, she was NOT from Spain, so she was "Latin American," not "Hispanic." And she said she was as white as any Caucasian European, she was not a "people of Color."

I think it's a bit of spin to say he meant counties. Again, though I don't like the way the tweet in the OP was presented, and am still a staunch believer in a dignified presidency, I was wrong again on how that tweet progressed.

Between Pressley just coming out and saying the racist remarks about (paraphrasing) "people of the same color, other than white, all need to think the same and act the same", and Omar double dog doubling down on her hate and anti-semitism, they completely fell into essentially a trap that in the end is just making Trump look like the curmudgeonly Uncle that spouts off at Thanksgiving dinner, while they look like racists, bigots, commies, and traitors. He said something crass that brought out the hate in the squad, that is now eclipsing what he said.

Again, while I don't like the tone of his OP tweet (If he had just said, "If you hate America, move somewhere else" I would have been fine with it), that doesn't mean I don't like him saying things straight.  I have no problems with the other tweet I posted as "much better". Unapologetically calling out that crap is better than dancing around it and letting them get away with it as "victims".

He meant exactly what he said. He blatantly called their Americanness into question, regardless of their actual citizenship status.

The four women are communists, so personally I’m OK with Trump saying what he said. It’s rude, crude and socially unacceptable but questioning communists loyalties is OK 👌 with me.

At this point the best we can do is be thankful for what good things Trump is doing and just let the rest roll of our shoulders.

Truthful, honest, “good”  people usually don’t get elected. They are a small minority of our politicians.

Trumps making the right enemies and trying to represent the right allies domestically so for that I’m thankful, even though I’m continually amazed and baffled by the things he tweets.

There is a method to his madness and it works.

Am I uncomfortable with “ the end justifies the means” tactics? You betcha.

I’m also uncomfortable losing to the Democrats and having them finish their project to fubar America permanently.

When all is said and done he may end up as the most conservative President in our lifetimes.

Well said.

Even if he doesn't say things as smoothly and well as we would like him to, I like that Trump is standing up to the leftists (Dems and Media) and refusing to back down even if what he said wasn't well stated.  I think sometimes conservatives get too demanding or purist.  Some seem to want the perfect speaker with a perfect background and perfect political views and if they fall short, they kick them to the curb.  I hope the next generation of Republicans is taking notes.

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-administration-announces-major-crackdown-on-asylum-seekers (https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-administration-announces-major-crackdown-on-asylum-seekers)

And it's worked brilliantly . . . .

I haven't totally read up on them, but I found the new rules interesting given that my understanding was that this was already a standard on the international law front: Ask for asylum in the first free country you enter. If you want to pick and choose, you're an immigrant, not an asylum seeker.

I would have thought we were already working under that principle. That we only now got around to codifying it shows how screwed up our immigration laws are.

I agree that he can't back down even on a minor point and probably shouldn't.  I just think it's unfortunate that he said the word "countries" (and "counties" wouldn't really have been any better now that I think about it)  Better to leave it ambiguous and leave that to their imaginations.  Maybe use "shitholes".

I saw an article a couple of days ago and now I can't find it, where the author referred to Ms Ocasio-Cortez as "Congressgirl".  I really like that.  It's just the right amount of dismissive. :)

Trump has the dems falling over themselves trying to outdo each other on doubling down on the same stuff that got Trump elected in 2016 and he's making doing it look as easy as grenades in a fish barrel.

I think sometimes conservatives get too demanding or purist.  Some seem to want the perfect speaker with a perfect background and perfect political views and if they fall short, they kick them to the curb.

True.  We manufacture our own vulnerabilities.  Screw the fine points of your personal philosphy.  We need a little more "lockstepping" in our own political approach.

I hope the next generation of Republicans is taking notes.

Won't do much good in the re-education camps.  Nowadays all we have to do is lose big once.  Suuuure, call it paranoia or tin-foil-hattery.   That's just what they want you to call it.

Mrs. Omar is not a victim, abused and intimidated by evil Trump supporters. She is not the enslaved woman in the old drawing, her hands in the pose of the supplicant, asking, “Am I not a woman and a sister?” She is much higher than that and much lower. More exalted, and more despised. In a word, she is a politician. A member of the U.S. House of Representatives, who sits on three Congressional committees, and in a number of caucuses. It is probably safe to say that she has more power in the allegedly white supremacist United States than any of the individuals in that crowd, chanting for her to be sent back. Whether one agrees with the sentiment or not, the crowd was punching up; not down.

It goes without saying that Omar’s privileged position does not make it OK to hate or harm her or to commit any actual crimes against her. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s acceptable to demand she be sent back. It does mean she’s fair game for protest and ridicule, just as Donald Trump is fair game for such. After all, this is America. In America, the government is obliged to show deference to the people; and not the other way around. It is our right, it is our custom, it is our pastime to (figuratively) abuse those elected to office.
