Title: Yellowstone Tourist Put Bison Calf in Car Because They’re Worried It’s Cold
Post by: MechAg94 on May 16, 2016, 10:52:04 AM
http://www.eastidahonews.com/2016/05/yellowstone-tourists-worried-bison-calf-is-cold-so-they-put-it-in-their-car/

Another story of clueless people who visit our parks.  I curious where the Bison's momma was.  I thought they were a bit protective.

I guess they didn't realize the animal had it's own buffalo robe to help with the cold.

Quote
Richardson says on Monday, as students were being taught at Lamar Buffalo Ranch, a father and son pulled up at the ranger station with a bison calf in their SUV.

“They were demanding to speak with a ranger,” Richardson tells EastIdahoNews.com. “They were seriously worried that the calf was freezing and dying.”

Quote
Heusevelet says the rangers followed the pair back to where they had picked up the bison, and the animal was released.

Maybe the Rangers should have showed them a bear cub that looked cold.   =D

The interesting thing to me is how clean the inside of that vehicle is.  If I tried to grab the average calf and put it into the back of an SUV, there would likely be a bit of a mess as they tend to relieve themselves when stressed.

Law enforcement rangers were called and the father-and-son tourists, who were from another country, were ticketed.

So, rental car, most likely.

Also, what other country could this be? My money says it has to be a European one. I suppose it could also be Japan, given the large numbers of people there without any experience outside an urban setting, but I'm still leaning towards Western Europe.

UPDATE: The National Park Service says the bison calf was rejected by its herd and had to be euthanized. Read more here.

I hope the rangers sent a picture of the dead calf to the asshats who essentially killed it.

I tried once. It didn't taste that great, because it was - wait for it - cold.

OK. Just saw the update about the late calf. That's terrible. I hope the tourons are still in country, or if not, that they end up paying a healthy fine, in any case.

Is it possible they thought the calf was cold because it had already been rejected and was isolated?  The article wasn't clear on what made them think it was cold.

It really doesn't matter. If they thought something was wrong (and who knows, could have been) the thing to do would be to contact the rangers and let them handle it, not go willy nilly picking it up and sticking it in the back of their SUV.

Or, just let it die. Because it's a wild animal.

I'm not excusing their action, just questioning if the death is fully on their hands.  If the animal had been rejected prior to them picking it up, then the death was unavoidable and not their responsibility.

That might help explain why the herd was not there to protect it from idjits.

That's just what I was thinking.  If it hadn't been rejected Momma would have been around to say no to their little plan.

Would also maybe explain why it let them put it in the SUV and not mess it up - it was probably already half-dead, and might actually have been cold, but more from starvation/dehydration because it hadn't nursed in way too long.

Which might explain why it was approaching people.  They were at least doing SOME physical things other than chase it off.

The only question I have is why euthanize the calf?  I know it had been rejected but why couldn't it have been placed in a sanctuary and allowed to live?

Might have been sick and killing it was a quarantine measure? Just guessing.

Considering the price of a bison, I'm sure someone would have been willing to come pick it up for free.

Not that hard to isolate it in a pen for a bit and see.  I mean, it let itself be loaded into an SUV, so it can't be that flighty.

Probably very, very sick then.

Moderate hypothermia or hypoglycemia from simple lack of food would cause that, and both are pretty easy to fix.

In this case, park rangers tried repeatedly to reunite the newborn bison calf with the herd. These efforts failed. The bison calf was later euthanized because it was abandoned and causing a dangerous situation by continually approaching people and cars along the roadway.
This article was linked in the update above.  It seems to imply the calf was rejected after Rangers tried to return it to the herd.

If it was in fact a new born calf, it would be pretty docile.  I am curious where the mother was when these tourists grabbed.

The mother could have been injured or dead as well.

and if bison have any similarities to goats (and I know I could be wayyyyy off here), she could have been young and this was a first calf. The goats get kind of screwed up all the time with their first kids. Sometimes they reunite, sometimes they don't, but the kid is removed from the pasture, they definitely don't.

Article I saw said they'd have to quarantine the calf for "months" before it could be moved to anywhere outside the park and that there are no suitable facilities for that.

Bison aren't rare or endangered, so why bother to spend the money to save the calf?

The tourons did the wrong thing, the Rangers did the right thing.

Dogs aren't rare or endangered, and many won't even grow up into food, so why do people spend money to save them?

How much taxpayer money should we spend?

Allowing a private party to do so would be reasonable to me.  I don't know if the park rules allow that.

Well, yes. Spending money on a domesticated animal where one would not on a wild one is pretty established and standard.

When can we expect your plans for a automated rehabilitation and feeding pen cobbled together from spare parts you found out back of the local dump? Should go horribly wrong, catch fire, and roast the poor beast just in time for supper.

Actually, that's precisely when the Dodge liked to catch fire.

Come to think of it, though, that was also the last car I bought from an established dealer.

Maybe you just suck at selecting cars.  I've never had a car leave me stranded or catch fire.  I currently own three vehicles, all paid off, ranging in age from 3yrs to 19yrs in age (owned them for 3, 6, and 14 years).   I'd hop in any of the three for a long trip.

But I'm just a sucker who pays more than $500 for a car.

So you can afford newer (as in 3-6 years old) cars than some people. And you have an older car that runs. I'm not sure what that's supposed to tell us.

The Dodge was close to $4k.  Only car fire that comes to mind since then was the squirrel nest in the blower of the Pontiac.  Not really the car's fault there.

I was just replying to KD's persistent meme that newer cars (or any car that requires a payment) fail.  And the 2nd car is 9yrs old, not 6.  we've owned it for 6.

With any luck the tourons will find a cold rattlesnake, or badger or something.  Might look like the local news story about the 3 (adult male) hunters in the cab of a Ford Ranger(little too close for me). They were just sitting there bonding when the bobcat hopped in the open window to investigate. Hilarity ensued I am sure. Except for the bobcat who expired from a close range gunshot wound. Poor kitty.

Nah...the world just needs a bigger crock pot.

Though I will say there's no better guard animal than a brahma bull who thinks he's a lap dog.  Unfortunately, there's no worse lap dog, either.  I'm just glad he didn't turn into a leghound.
