Wow, did Firing Line just get totaled?
« on: November 15, 2007, 06:12:34 AM »
Just went there and it's showing a Network Solutions "coming soon" placeholder with the games/casinos/etc BS links.

Someone forget to pay a bill?

What are you talking about?

I was just there and posted several messages.

I read this message, and went there again.

It's working just fine for me, and is showing as active and up-to-date.

You are talking about www.thefiringline.com, Rich Lucibella's site, correct?

Yup. Going there again, I get the standard "no site here" placeholder with links to BS casinos and stuff.

Maned, I just went there and got the REAL main page. Maybe it's time to run an anti-spyware scan ??

Works fine for me.  Clear your cache and try again.

Anyways, wasn't it a few weeks ago that TFL had DNS issues and everyone was adding the IP address into the hosts file on their PCs? If you've done that then you're routed to the IP regardless of what the internet DNS servers say.

That's why I asked if anyone had the frickin' IP to see if the site is still there, but Network Solutions is pointing the name to the wrong place.

I can confirm that someone's DNS server out there is borked. Works from Comcast, does not work from.. er... work.

ping TFL from here: 209.62.20.186
ping TFL from Comcast: 208.67.249.138

Spyware? I'm on a Mac.

Uh, huh.  Have you checked?

For theoretical threats that don't even exist yet despite Symantec's dire predictions that they had to swallow with a hearty dose of crow a few months ago?

Installing stuff in OSX as I have it, unlike Windows, requires my administrator-level approval with a password. For ANY installation or new runtime. And I can see all active processes in a Unix list in a Terminal window. Anything I don't recognize was running, I'd see it. And I don't install anything that's not a major application package from a trusted company.

In fact, the only thing that would introduce a security hole in OSX is Norton Antivirus.  cheesy

Quote
On Tuesday, Symantec admitted that all versions of Norton Anti-Virus (NAV) contain a security vulnerability that could allow a malicious user to remotely take control of the computer. This kind of announcement is common to Windows users but this flaw also affects NAV running on Apple's OS X platform.

It works if I enter the direct IP of 208.67.249.138.

If I just use the name, it resolves to the wrong address and brings up the placeholder.

Odd.

It's the day after my Birthday, I'm browsing it right now. =\

I must be on psychoactive drugs again.  I don't remember writing that first line of text...I seem to remember stating that Mike Irwin is my favorite Mod in the world....but it's not there anymore.  Weird.

OH SHI now it's doing it to me!  I got a placeholder site!  I better call Geico so I can save 15% or more on my car insurance!!!

Thor,

You emphasized the "AM" in your reply, inferring that I or someone else had said that Comcast is not working. My apologies.

EDIT: btw, might want to get that IP and have it handy, what we're watching is a DNS change propogating over the 'net. If uncorrected then in a couple hours nobody will be working.

See above, just use the IP address instead of the domain name in your browser.

open a dos prompt and type "nslookup www.thefiringline.com", press enter, and you'll get your answer.

Leave off the quotes.
