mtnbkr, that'll only work if you aren't already on the new incorrect page.

The "right" IP is 208.67.249.138, so http://208.67.249.138/forums .

TC,

Wait about an hour and it won't anymore.

A WHOIS lookup shows that the domain was last updated Nov 15 2007, so whatever happened was likely fixed today.

My hunch is that the domain (originally registered Oct 2, 1998) expired on October 1 this year.  Network Solutions, and other registrars, don't remove the domains from their records immediately after expiring.  They let them pile up and batch them all out.

I'll bet it got purged last night or early this morning, somebody at TFL noticed, paid their dues to Network Solutions, and we're just waiting the 24-72 hours that it takes for the new primary and secondary DNS servers for thefirling.com to trickle their way through the system.

I don't know if y'all remember about the LMHosts file and editing that. There was a thread on it when THR and APS was having problems with the DOS attacks or whatever was the cause.

What is the address for THR?

I tried 209.51.144.70, and got something other than THR.

That's the right address but it looks like Derek is using the HTTP "Host:" header to direct traffic.

Open up C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\HOSTS with Notepad.exe and add the following line:

209.51.144.70    www.thehighroad.org

Then you will be able to get to THR without relying on DNS.

When THR moves, and nobody tells you, and you suddenly can't get there remove that line from your HOSTS file.

Thanks Gigabuist. Tried it, but my work firewall still busted me.

Can't open it.
I started there three years ago when it had just
been a library of the old posts, maybe it's getting that way again and Rich
will concentrate on his SWAT magazine ?

Laurent, I'm detecting some sarcasm in there, hopefully.

It's probably nothing more than a small server glitch.

If you have issues with Rich and/or TFL, I'm sure he'd appreciate hearing it from you directly vs. third hand.

In other words, we don't denigrate sister forums (THR, TFL) on this one.

Likewise, if you have issues with Manedwolf's post count, same thing.  Take a look at Mike Irwin's post count over there sometime.  Some people write a lot, some don't.  Don't read anything into it.

What's wrong with TFL?

My last posts there were a recommendation of a certain sort of Dynamit-Nobel ammo and a pleasant discussion with others on the merits of various higher-end AK derivatives.

Do you not like the place or something?

Why would I try to open it if I didn't like it ?
I did spend a lot of time there when it was still down and correct
me if I'm wrong but the reason of the closing of TFL was Rich needing more time
for his magazine, absolutly understandable or not ?
I would like everybody to write more and if had contributed many (15000)posts
to a Forum then I sure wouldn't like the place to close down so that's why it is a pitty.
No sarcasm, no denigrating.
I still hang out on the Revolver place over there and read the occasional post of Wildalasca. I also think I've posted over there when APS and THR was down.
And I remember one Tamara...

I think I have it straight...

Sometime in the past (~2001), Rich needed to spend more time on his SWAT magazine. This resulted in THR starting up, as many of the members moved over there. Then, TFL was able to restart, and now THR and TFL are sister forums. Each has members that participate on both forums, and some on or the other, and if one goes down, members will move to the other to get their fix.

TFL is up for me, too.

Yeah, well, at the time, if I recall, the signal to noise ratio was also getting a bit wonky... Too many headaches...
