Selling a car, Private party
« on: January 26, 2006, 02:25:04 PM »
I have a car to sell and I only want $500-600 for it, what would be the easiest and cheapest route to do so. Its like $50 to take out a classified ad in the paper.

Every car in the past that I have sold has been done word of mouth and everyone I know doesn't have interest or know of anyone interested in it.

open for suggestions, its a 92 Geo Metro.

This seems to be fairly busy.I've no idea what,if any,the chg might be.

OTOH,sometimes you can donate to a charity & get a tax deduction out of it.

$500 should be enough for a decent Model 28,57,or 29.Smiley

Is there anyplace in town that folks park 'em with a For Sale sign?  We have 2-3 places in town where folks will park them with a big sign and phone#.  It helps if you do a printout from KBB or Edmunds (whichever makes YOU look best) and tape it in the window as well.

eBay's 80-120 bucks, so that's out.
FWIW, there's a community access channel that runs a "Classified Live" show daily where you can call in and place FREE ads here.  Told y'all it's Mayberry!

Drive it for a week and put signs in the windows with a big "$600.  555-1212" and see what you get.

Do you live on a busy road, or have a buddy that does?  Stick it on the side, with a big FOR SALE sign on it.

I can top that. Here, they run them on the radio once a day. Not at all unusual to have an ad that says "Mossberg 500 shotgun. Will take $100.00 or trade for livestock."

One of my friends visiting came to find me to tell me the radio station just announced a missing cow. Um, hello, yes? How else are you going to find a cow? This, apparently, is not done everywhere. How they find cows, I do not know. Maybe a classified newspaper ad?

Anyway, if you only want 500-600 bucks for it, don't put a lot of money into getting rid of it. Park it somewhere high school kids are likely to see it.

To combine Fig, jef, and Barbara's post you can do what they do where I live. Park it in the grocery store parking lot, on the busy road, across from the McDonald's full of high school kids. The cheap cars go fast.

If you've already followed their advice the car should be sold by the time you read this. Tongue

Just park it on a heavily-trafficked street with a for sale sign. I did that with my old beater pickup truck and it sold in 45 minutes. $500 cars are hard to come by.

Yep, cheap cars sell fast.  I used a local paper's classified ad special (2 lines, 10 days, $10... or something), the car was sold in two days.

craigslist
ebay  (I know, but it really works, I swear)
park it on a corner (but expect it to be stolen or ticketed)

the papers here are outrageous for a classified (like 60 bucks for two weeks. and they can't figure out why the number of ads keeps decreasing)

Those would be mine.

craigslist rules..  I listed my car a week and a half ago, second person who inquired about the car showed up and paid me cash for it, no haggling at all just paid me the full amount I listed it at. I think I must have listed it too low Smiley
