I'm so damned fustrated with this thing that I could load up the 10 guage shottie and blow it all to hell!!!

Can't get crap to load image wise since I upgraded to SP2. Also, with Mozilla, some images (gif) won't load. Tried to configure a wireless Linksys router and couldnt get half of the tabs to load on the page. Tried every setting change known to man and it still isn't working. After I got that darn pop up trojan things have been crappy ever since.

I'm putting stuff on CD that I want to keep and wiping this damn hard drive. Starting at the beginning.

I despise SP2. I never load it on any PC I'm responsible for.

Hmmm. I've had zero issues with SP2 on the boxen I run and/or have control over. All are XP Pro though, that may impact the end results.

Therein may lay your problem. I got a pop-up infection on the work machine, and it REALLY dragged down the performance until I could clean it out. Home PCs have been kept clean from the get go, so the only slowdowsn have been perception wise, based on older hardware.

dasmi, how does the BSD flavored stuff compare to Linux distros. Better, worse, different flavor of the same idea?

Different flavor of the same idea, I'd say.
However, in my completely subjective opinion, PC-BSD(FreeBSD) and KDE 3.5 are a much faster combination than Ubuntu Linux and KDE 3.5 were on this same machine.

Hmm.

Have you tried installing it on a laptop yet? That's probably the one thing that's keeping me from going *nix. You can't find something where everything works or can be made to work with a few conf file tweaks.

Actually, yes!
I've tried PC-BSD and Ubuntu Linux on various laptops. Usually, everything works but the onboard wireless.

Not anymore! Just got done formatting, installing and updating my hard drive and windows. All is well now until the next hack attack.

SP2 works very well. In my experience (network/desktop support for a living) the machines that have problems with SP2 are primarily machines that had some sort of viral/spyware infection when SP2 was applied. I've seen infected machines blow up horribly when SP2 was installed. If you have doubts about a machine, back up all the data, wipe, reinstall from scratch, patch & set up your apps.

That was most likely my issue. Since I had SP1 and upgraded to SP2, alot of pages wouldnt load gif files and such. Got tired of that and all the pop up issues so I put all the stuff I wanted to save on CD's and wiped the hard drive.

All depends on what system you are running. If its Windows XP then throw in your XP reinstallation disc and follow the commands for installing XP. It will come to a part where it asks you which drive to format and you select "C". After it formats the drive it will start to install a fresh load of XP. After that, you have to add all of your drivers, anti-virus, spyware blocker and then update XP thru microsoft.com.

Thanks, Leenyjoe. I have a dying laptop with XP Pro installed, so I have the disc for XP Pro and have paid for and registered it. What would be the possibility of installing XP Pro on my desktop?

Should. You can load XP pro on your home CP as well. Just be sure you format the hard drive first.

The most vulnerable time will be after you install Windows and go on the web for updates. Make sure you have your Anti-virus, spyware and firewall (if you have one) up and running before you hit the internet.
