If we define religion so broadly that it encompasses any point of view one can name. So ideas are the root of all evil!  =)

Ideas have consequences.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

I've always thought of Atheism as a religion.
[/quote]

It, like any other religion, requires a faith in something that cannot be definitively proven.

I realize that nonbelief, in theory, doesn't require proof by its very nature.

However, many atheists do precisely what they accuse believers of doing: ignore evidence to the contrary.

Christians are often accused of being closed-minded, but it often the atheist who avoids discussion on the very nature of human existence.

I came to an extremely EXTREMELY tentative belief, one step removed from hope, because I asked myself some very difficult questions that apologists were willing to discuss. The atheist's answers essentially boiled down to "Don't ask."

Ironic that belief on some religion has caused more deaths in world history than any other cause.

Humans rationalize their behavior in many strange ways.

Unfortunately, power always seems to cloud religious beliefs.....

Religion + power over others = Trouble

Power over others + The desire for said power = Trouble.

Religion is most often just a mean to an end.

My mom had mostly Irish Protestant heritage and Dad had mostly Irish Catholic.

When I lived in Ireland I would tell people that's why I have this tendency to beat my self up.

So all this broccoli and cabbage boils down to... greed (including the desire for power) and/or intolerance?

Is it really that simple?

We do all realize that while Mubarak is gone, the same interests that controlled him are still controlling the Egyptian military - and in fact, Tantawi is still defending Mubarak in court?

>religion is often a smoke-screen<

Should have left this sentence end right there.

I have seen LOTS of lunacy and atrocity excused or covered with the use of religion.

And no, I am NOT picking a=on any one faith. Pretty much every faith has been used in such a fashion.

This goes from the wacky "we're being good vegans in harmony with Mother Gia, we  don't understand why our child starved to death" to the numerous cases where someone commits a heinous act, and everyone is heard to exclaim "but he was such a good, churchgoing man"

No Child Should Live In Fear

What was that about a pearl handled revolver and someone from New Orleans again?

Screw it: just autoclave the planet (thanks Birdman)
