SECNAV Packs in Astan
« on: December 31, 2017, 01:42:19 PM »
I'm unfamiliar with in-theater rules on who gets to carry, but from the armchair, good on the SECNAV. As one of the commenters noted, if you CCW in the US, why wouldn't you want to carry (when allowed) in Afghanistan?

While I'm sure he was surrounded by security, I like the "common sense" optics of taking some responsibility for his own well-being, just as any of us do here when we CC. It's just a tool man - don't have a cow. :)

The article should tell us if SECNAV gets the latest and greatest issue Sig, or does he get a clapped-out Beretta M-9?

If I couldn't carry a gun in Afghanistan - I just wouldn't go. (I'm not in the military, so nobody can order me to go over there.)

A percussion revolver....in Afghanistan....in 2017?    Really?  (Uberti or Pietta?).

The Navy didn't buy very many, really,  the army did.   It's "navy" caliber,  that is .36 caliber .   Army was .44 caliber.

It's not a proper 1911 so who cares?
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. That was the model of 1860, not 1851.

Not sure what that is.
Definitely not...

It is a Beretta M9.  Click on the photo in the link and then embiggen it.  The Beretta 92fs/M9 has a distinctive curve to the frame.  You van also see the logo and screws for the stocks.

Yep.

And if it was something they offered him in country,  the M9 would be what was in the armory.

The 1851 was not manufactured in .44 caliber.

*Sigh*

I'm simply excited that we have a SECNAV that would even carry.  The prior ones probably would have fainted if offered.  (Did any of Obama's Service Secretaries ever go into a theater ??)

Thread drift:  someone I know bought a Beretta M9A3 recently.  I got to shoot a few rounds with it last week.  A very sweet shooting pistol.  I had a 92FS years ago and the trigger is 10 times better.  I love the straight grip also.  It came with a grip adapter to add the palm swell if you liked that.  If it wasn't for the price I would over to Cabela's myself and see if they still had any.

Oooops...lost the quotes.   Oh well.

The 1851 model was a .36 caliber revolver.  IIRC Colt made some experimental models in .41,  but never marketed them.  .36 was said to be "Navy Caliber,"  but that doesn't mean they were exclusive to the navy.

The 1860 was .44 caliber.   .44 was said to be "Army,"  but again,  that doesn't mean they were exclusive to the army.
Ok?

None of these percussion weapons will ever be re-adopted for current military service....unless the procurers  develop a serious case of overwhelming insanity.   So this whole discussion is immaterial.   Not to mention wierd.
