One of the stories said he would have to permission from the appropriate authority to carry.

To which I replied:  "He IS the appropriate authority."

Did I see someone else in the background with a thigh rig as well?

I guess the philosophy is do it until someone says no.

While I don't like high-riding holsters because my strong arm doesn't readily bend that way (hence my preference for cross-draw), I suspect thigh rigs aren't real good for running.  Sort of like ankle rigs.

Strikes me that thigh rigs are good for imitating cowboy movie dusty street draw-downs or something.  Or maybe for keeping the gun out of the way of other stuff one might have to carry in a full-bore military / tactical loadout.

Or for intimidating the unarmed peons?

But what do I know?

I think every SWAT team I've ever seen photos of has been equipped with thigh rigs. I know the arson field squad from my state's State Police wear 5-11 tactical (cargo) pants and thigh rig holsters as their standard duty uniform. So do the K-9 handlers.

Thigh rigs are pretty common in theater.

It drops it down from body armor,  as well as allowing you to keep your weapon on you and doff said body armor. They also tend to come off and on without unlacing your belt.

You can draw when seated in a vehicle, as well as easily in the 1,589,609 clearing barrels scattered around FOBs.

They aren't great for runing, and tend to hit on doorways and *expletive deleted*it.

I deploy with a thigh rig, a drop/offset belt holster and a molle holster on my armor. I stick my M9 in whichever is better for that day's activities.

I think these two are related.

Oh, man, over the decades I've used so many holsters that I've got a big boxful of them.  Drop-holster-wise, I used this hinged one for a while since it was given to me and, well, um, you gotta use it if a friend gave it to you, right?

It's the old highway patrol model... I call it my Barney Fife holster.

I always liked this style (although it's not great for concealed carry)

Unlike all the serpa clad ninjas stateside it looks to me the only two practical rigs in combat are the thigh holster for reasons mentioned and on the chest of the plate carrier, easy access in vehicles. Anything on the waist is not practical with armor, vehicles, and the vast amount of other crap carried.

That's why I added that remark about depending on loadout.

We were pretty much always issued a thigh holster since we wore armor, although I would try to snag the one belt holster if I could as I hated the thigh one.

Back in the day, I refused to wear the pistol belt holster and wore the shoulder holster instead.  IN fact I still have mine.

Ours were black leather and not brown.

With the modern body armor, that rig is somewhat impractical, but they now have this:

Yeah, right over COM.  A "trauma gun."

Frankly, if open carry for real (as opposed to in theory) ever comes about, I might be tempted to try a chest rig.  I know some big game hunters carry their big game hanguns that way.

But I too, hate shoulder rigs.  I've only got one, but if it's an adequate sample, yuck.

I have a chest rig I bought years ago for a S&W 627 357 mag 8-shot.  It does keep it out of the way of your arms, but the revolver seems a lot bigger strapped across my chest.  It might be the extra mass just below my chest that is the culprit.

Yer not talkin' "gun," here, right?  Yer talkin' "personal" mass, right?  ???

And somehow when I think of a chest holster, I think "gun bra."

Gun bra for men? Moob holster? Maybe just duck tape and bare skin. Anyone remember SkunkApe from TFL?  [barf]

I once saw a pic of prince Harry in his pre-SJW, pre-trailer trash Barbie days carrying a BHP just stuffed in the molle loops on his plate carrier. I would find that ideal as long as I could be assured the front sight doesn't snag coming out, which I think it would.
