Gaming TVs?
« on: November 27, 2019, 09:28:33 AM »
I was just looking at the thread about Black Friday and saw TVs for sale which triggered a memory of a discussion I had with my son recently about TVs.

He was telling me that he played FPS games much better on the 42" Plasma (I bought this one 12-13 years ago) at his mom's house than he did on the 55" LED at my house. I can't put my finger on it, but I think he is on to something.

Is there anything to this? I personally play mainly RPGs because I generally suck at FPSs unless I have 2-3 hours to 'get in the groove'- which is a rare amount of time I have to invest these days.

Plasma's still have better blacks then the cheap and mid range LEDs and often better contrasts, but you still run the real risk of image burn in on things like reticles and HUD's, especially on FPS's.  Plasma's can also have a pretty sizable input lag.

A good OLED panel is going to blow anything 12-13 years old out of the water.

My understanding is that gaming monitors are still top of the heap for fast FPS gaming.

Pro gamers and you tubers play on high res computer monitors.  He’s probably playing closer to the smaller tv and the smaller field of view ups reaction time

That's what I told him... mine is wall mounted and probably 10-12 ft away...

What about refresh rates?  I've seen TVs with lower refresh rates that appear to blur fast action video, such as football.

Refresh rate could be part of it. Most lower end tvs are 60hz, some bump up to 120, plasmas were the equivalent of about 600hz. Everything ran smoother on them. Plus, there weren't really any low priced plasmas. They tended to be pretty expensive.
