I was thinking about how when the .GOV isn't funded they shut down parks and things that affect the public directly to show how important the government is in daily life. It occurred to me that it should go in the other direction too. If the government is shut down, the payroll departments should stop deducting federal taxes and sending them to the government. Makes sense to me. I'll bet if that came up as a serious proposal we would have an annual budget on time every single year. Of course it would have to be nation wide or they would somehow find the money in the budget to arrest the first violator.

I bet that Trump won't do the crap that Obama did. He'll do it so that no one notices it's shutdown other then the chattering class in NYC and DC.

I thought we'd had one brief shutdown already under Trump. Instead of closing the national parks, he opened them up for free.

Got word today from our program manager that even if the government shuts down that:

1. It's a limited shut down.

2. Won't affect my organization.

So, we keep working.

I have heard that something on the order of 90% of the govt is funded so only a few things will be greatly affected. I saw a pie chart the other day, but I can't remember where it was from.

An interesting and at the time little-known fact during one of the shutdowns ~15 years ago was that you could file for temporary unemployment benefits in advance of the shutdown so you'd have cash flow during the "outage" and not have to wait that two weeks before receiving benefits.

If no outage occured, there was no penalty for filing in advance; your case was just closed.

If you got back pay after the "outage" was over, you had to refund it, but at least you could buy groceries and cat food and pay your ISP bills in the meantime.

That's for Colorado and a while ago, but it might be worth looking into in your State. By now, it might even be common knowledge, but it was a big surprise to many folks at the time.

Other than some government workers and a few vacationers who found places like the Smithsonian and Yellowstone Park closed, I'll venture to say that most Americans would not have even been aware of previous "government shutdowns" if not for news reports.

Any government shutdown should include all congress weasels being sent home without pay and being forbidden to perform government related work.

Better yet, require the elected weasels to work (without pay), but require their staffs to stay home and not work. Including staff at offices in their home states (I assume those offices are run using federal dollars).

You know we can expect a non-stop barrage of "TEOTWAWKI !!! Trump shuts down the government. Women and Minorities most affected. !!!! The HORROR!!!!!" breathless reporting about what a big meanie Trump is.

Meanwhile most people will notice no change in their daily lives.

Yea it only affects 25% of the government.
FAA isn't funded.
And it's christmas.
But since we're a federal Union, we can't engage in "work actions" such as slowing down the christmas travel, since we'd all be working for IOU's at christmas.

Mark Steyn was guest-hosting for Limbaugh on Monday. He reported it as 86% is always funded without congressional action needed.

Well for some reason New York gets away with this sort of thing, but none of the rest of the union has the balls to do it.

I think what I saw was supposed to be accounting for continuing resolutions previously passed. Only a portion of what is left will run out of money.
