Isn't there a web-page where I can enter a phone number and find out who it is assigned to?  I thought Google had such a feature.  I did find a web-site that will do it for a fee, but I wondered if there might be a free site.

I am in a peculiar situation where I have a phone number, and I need to find out who it belongs to.  I wish I could just call the number and find out, but I need to avoid making contact with this person.  I am hoping that if I don't respond, the situation will die down.

switchboard.com

Look for the reverse lookup feature.

If you don't get what you want on one, try the others.

If the number isn't listed, or is newly listed, you're probably out of luck.

Mike already got you covered.  

Google does have something like that, only you can opt out of it.  All you have to do is type in the 10 digit number in google.
