funny anecdote re: space shuttle.
« on: October 08, 2005, 04:25:04 PM »
So the space shuttle has vents that blow fresh air over the sleeping astronauts, to presumably stop local CO2 buildup.  The vents needed louvers to control the air flow.  Due however, to time constraints and engineering bureaucracy, the designers opted to borrow the louvers from a car, and the louvers that fit the vents were those from a 1979 Toyota corolla.  However, not wanting to draw attention to the fact that the American Space Shuttle used car parts from a toyota (remember the late 1970's early 80's Japan Inc was smashing Detroit), engineers went into the toyota dealer and paid cash for 5 sets of auto louvers.

Very Funny

Ahh!  That explains that expression I kept hearing throughout the '80s:

AMERICA!! Louver or leave her!

That hurt.

They bought the louvers from a dealership?  No wonder why the space shuttle cost so much.

9 bux at a dealer vs. 900 if they'd designed and built it themselves.  The reason it was so expensive is they ONLY bought the louvers Smiley
