I wonder if there's someone on the inside at Norfolk Southern telling them which trains have firearms on the manifest. A typical freight train can have 100+ cars. Breaking into the car with the guns by random chance seems unlikely.

The Landers yard is in the heart of the 'hood. 79th and Western. They are breaking into every boxcar and container they can. Damn near every container that we ever pulled out of there had been broken into, and this was back in mid-90's. Fortunately, most of what we had going through there was clothes for Land's End or industrial components (think heavy machine parts), so the thieves would rip open some of the boxes, discover that it wasn't readily fencible, then just scatter the *expletive deleted*it everywhere. We actually lost very little stuff and spent a few man-hours re-packaging/boxing clothes and filing out claim paperwork.
At the time, I mentioned to the NS loss prevention folks that losing a shipment of firearms would be "VERY BAD", and was told that they don't accept firearms.
I guess they do now...
