And people wonder why I hate being a college student?
« on: November 28, 2007, 07:31:02 PM »
This was in my university e-mail account. No, it is not the first this semester. Just figured I would post it for posterity. (Bolded mine.)

Chattanooga City Police and UTC Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred this evening at the 2000 building of the UTC Place Apartments.

Two African-American males, described as clean shaven in their early 20s wearing hooded sweatshirts approached a group of students as they entered the building. One of the assailants is described as having dreadlocks.  One student was grabbed while the others were able to get into the building and close the door.

One of the assailants pulled a handgun and demanded the students wallet.  They fled without further incident.

Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to exercise caution when outdoors, especially after dark.  If you are approached or threatened, turn over property to the assailant, seek safety and contact the police immediately.

The UTC Campus Police offers an escort service on campus by calling the dispatcher at 425-4357 or using one of the Emergency Blue Phones located throughout campus.  Campus Housing also offers the Lookout Express escort on campus by calling 425-5900.

If you have any information about this crime or to report other suspicious activity, contact the UTC Campus Police at 425-4357.

Yep, that advice makes me feel SO much better. Kind of nice to see the 'every man for yourself mentality' when they left one of their own to face the BGs alone. Thank you commie-left speaker Naifeh for keeping guns banned on schools/colleges. It has made us all so much safer! BAH!

But it's for your own good, comrade.  Can you not see?  Perhaps you need re-education, so that you might appreciate the glories of the revolution.

Fighting back against a bad guy means TWO people may be hurt . . . that potentially DOUBLES the violence!

Plus, if the bad guy is killed by his victim, he won't be able to have a trial . . . and denying someone their right to a fair trial is downright un-American.

Don't forget, if he was to injur or kill his assailant...I mean victim, that victim's family would lose their loved one, their source of income, and never be the same again, all because he was just unwilling to give up a couple of dollars, an IPod, a credit card or two...meaningless possessions to this privileged college student who has the world on string.  And the victim of this student had to fight (pun intended) for almost every dollar he put in his pocket.  The victim put his life on the line every day just to put food in his mouth.

Effective use of a hand held weapon would mean a maximum of ONE person being hurt.  I like the way that math works out in my method.

While you're at college...

See if you can find a dictionary in the library somewhere.

It'll give you the proper spelling of involved, vs. what's posted in your sigline. Wink

At A&M, the Corps of Cadets offered an escort service as well.  Some women I talked to said they just hit on them the entire time and the cops weren't any better.  Oh well.  Smiley

I guess it's one case where liberals get it right: the escort service at Brown always consisted of a male and a female.

Well, almost right. I knew a guy who requested an escort once. They mocked him all the way back to his dorm.  undecided

My most common gripe involves some variation on the following:

<After the video, Sergeant Rick Bauer of the UTD Police Department answered questions from the students, stating, among other points that on street encounters in Richardson one does not have to show ID, however, on the UTD campus, it is required.>

Required in what capacity? _Legally_ required or required by UTD of UTD students?

This is exactly the kind of confusion I see all the time. The complete apathy regarding where the police's legal authority ends and administrative authority begins. All too often, they (the administration and the police) would prefer everyone forgot the distinction.

If you refuse to show ID/<any other strictly UTD policy but not Richardson law> on the UTD campus, are you breaking the law, or just breaking UTD's rules? Then, if the officer insists that you show ID/the other thing, are you then resisting police authority, or just school authority? Could you be resisting a police officer? How can you be sure? Odds are, you are just going to comply to be on the safe side. And what if you aren't a UTD student in the first place?

People need to be very careful of delineating legal authority from administrative authority on issues surrounding colleges and universities, where police act both as 'real' police and as rule-enforcers for the university. It is all too easy and completely commonplace to see police attempt, deliberately or not, to use their real, legal authority in the enforcement of what aren't actually laws, which is equivalent to the organization (university) literally buying out the police authority for use in enforcing their rules. The danger in this should be clear. Can I buy some police authority too?
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

I remember what my principal told fellow highschoolers a long time ago when they complained local hooligans took their money: "Well, organize among yourselves and beat the crap out of the dirtbags!"

I do not understand what happened to testosterone in modern society.
