Klansman sworn in for 9th term, then collapses
« on: January 06, 2007, 06:54:29 PM »
Quote
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia was sworn in for the ninth time Thursday, and he did it in signature style.

The West Virginia "Exalted Cyclops", who turns 90 this year and is the longest-serving member of the current Senate, is known for his long speeches, his knowledge of Senate rules and his flamboyant personality.

He first spoke through the opening prayer, calling "Praise Jesus," and "yeah!"

After he was sworn in by Vice President Cheney, he pumped his fist and yelled, "So help me God!"

Just after that, Byrd appeared weak and started to collapse. He was caught by his West Virginia colleague, Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller, and other senators standing nearby.

Byrd didn't miss a step as he then walked back to his desk, giving a loud "Hallelujah!" to the crowd.

He later stood behind new Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, patting him on the back as Sanders took the oath of office.

His mind is gone, but as a Democrat this is not a serious problem for him.

I think you mean, "as a Senator, this is an asset in his line of work."

I'm going to have to go with Cosmoline on this one.  Even Bob Hope knows the answer to this question.

OK, here's what really ticks me off about the Honorable Senator Robert Byrd:

Most people don't know that he was (or maybe still is) a member of the Klan.

Most folks figure that it was Republicans like Strom Thurmond who were the racists.

Thurmond died within days of another Southerner, Lester Maddox. Maddox always had a baseball bat with him, which he displayed proudly, along with this sign stating "we have the right to refuse service to anyone."

Well, Thurmond was a Republican, and so he got the media lashings even as his funeral went on.

But, wait...Lester Maddox, who publicly challenged blacks to enter his restaurant, and who did so while holding his baseball bat, was a Democrat.

How many people who read the newspaper stories about Thurmond's death knew he was a Republican, versus the number of people who knew that Maddox was a Democrat?

The answer is easy.

What is bothersome about Byrd is that we all assume he has repented of his Klan ways, while unfounded allegations that candidate X used racial slurs twenty years ago are sure signs of persistent racism.

I heard the tape on the Sean Hanitty radio show, he is pretty good with
not reporting rumors.
Politicians and bureaucrats are considered productive if they swarm the populace like a plague of locust, devouring all substance in their path and leaving a swath of destruction like a firestorm. The technical term is "bipartisanship".

Watch your mouth, boy! The senile old fart ain't no hillbilly! He kept a Sophia, WV, POBox address for years but for the last several years hasn't even bothered with that!!

Did you see the network piece on "King of Pork"? The dumb sh++ didn't grant an interview despite several attempts by the network so they caught him walking his dog early one morning. He went absolutely ballistic and then appeared on the floor of the senate (no caps there!) postitvely appoplectic! All he had to say is "That's what my constituents expect". I've never liked him but as I've matured (very) I have to admit that he's very good at bring fed funds to WV. Of course, he's traded FBI fingerprint center in WV for a Chicken lab i Idaho and a methane from manure plant in Ill for it( for example?). Who's paying for all that? But us real Hillbillies seldom consider that!!

Maybe if we tell him that while he was unconscious he received mouth-to-mouth from a gay Sammy Davis Jr impersonator?   grin
