looking for a new multi tool

i currently have an original leatherman. i have used this for 15 years, and have been satisfied with the quality of the tool, although i would like to have locking blades.  i recently saw an add for the leatherman crunch. this has a locking pliers (like a vise-grip). has anyone used one?

i was wondering what multi tools others have that they are happy with?

I'm currently rolling with the SOG multi tool.  No complaints whatsoever, and the customer service is better than leatherman's.  I looked high and low for a new Leatherman super tool, couldn't find a new one, so bought the SOG and never looked back. 

The coolest feature on the SOG tool is the geared plier, makes em' way more user friendly than my old leatherman super tool.  You can see the gearing at the pivot point in this pic.



And as an added bonus, SOG doesn't donate bunches of money to socialists (DNC)

I love the Gerbers.  Good knives, and the one-handed flck opening is very useful.

Like the smoothness of the SOG's too, but I buy Gerber.

the sog looks like it would compound the leverage of the pliers with the gearing (they remind me of bolt cutter technology). do they?

i like that the skeletool puts the knife on the outside for easier opening. but, if i were to limit the amount of tools available, i think i would like the locking pliers on the leatherman crunch.

I used to really like the slide out Gerber style, but I lost mine years back.  Not too long ago my wife bought me a Gerber Suspension.  It's a more traditional fold-out tool with spring-loaded pliers.  I like it a lot.

+1 on the gerber suspension.  Great little tool.  Looks really neat also.



When in pliers mode, the handles swing out from center and up to close.  This means two things:

1. when pliers are closed, the blades and stuff are exposed to the outside for easy opening
2. The pliers are comfortable on the hands because the blade opening is on the inside of the handle in pliers mode.
On two occasions, I have been asked [by members of Parliament], "Pray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into the machine wrong figures, will the right answers come out?" I am not able to rightly apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.

I received a Leatherman tool years ago as a gift. It broke. Ibought a Gerber tool that week, been using it since.
Almost 10 years now.

I've always been a fan of the Gerber slide-out multitools.  The Leathermen Crunch is nice if you have to work on Bradleys (Pena taught me that, I was a HMMWV driver...).

You mean all those millions of liberal Democrats that read APS?  I suppose we should all buy stock in Leatherman, then.

But you forget that, possibly, one or two people might stumble across this forum, who oppose Leatherman's left-leaning political  contributions


Besides, I don't dislike Leatherman.  I am impressed by the quality of tools I have had from them, and the great service.  If I had need of another multi-tool, the current crop of Leatherman tools would be first in my consideration.

Victorinox SwissTool. Really high quality, especially the pliers. I keep a Vise-grip brand multi in my truck, less tools than others but it has a hex drive adapter. The pliers can do serious work on larger bolts and with a cheapo 90 piece bit set for the hex drive I can break anything.

How about the Fubar by Stanley?  I bought one for my BIL for Xmas, and decided one would look great in my truck also.  Pics tomorrow if it will stop drizzlymisting enough to take some pictures.

I've had an SOG Powerlock for probably 7 or 8 years now, and still love it. The finish is a bit worn as is the leather it came in, but I'm still glad I made the purchase after all this time.  smiley

I won a Leatherman Surge at a silent auction a couple months ago, came with the bit set and saw/file interchangeable blades.  It was a kit in a neat little cheap aluminum/glass case with a c308 pocket knife.

I've been a big fan of the Gerber slide-outs for a long time. Easy opening, do everything.
I have been intrigued by the SOG one-handers, but haven't gotten around to trying one.

I've had my Leatheramn Wave for 6 or 7 years now, and love it.I'm AWEFL hard on tools, and this things still going strong(I did bend the saw blade a little using it as a pry bar, but no biggie.Suprised I didnt break it off).Only thing I wish it had were some bits.When I finally destroy this one, I'll probly get a Surge (unless they have something better when I need on in 10 years or so....) Oh, and that Geber Skeletool is REALLY sweet lookin.
