In our 40 years of marriage my wife has always prepared our taxes. She even took several courses on doing it but our taxes have always been pretty simple.
For 2021 with the retirement we have a little bit more to contend with with IRA and Pension stuff but still mostly straight forward with no weird stuff in the mix.
What are some of the better (least expensive) options for preparation and filing?

I'm using Cash App Tax this year, which last year was Credit Karma's free tax service. They sold it to Cash App.

I'm still waiting for a bunch of paperwork from my various investment companies, so I won't be finished for awhile.

Tax Act is still a viable option; I gave them up a couple of years ago when I was dissatisfied with their a la carte pricing and what I was going to have to pay for my tax situation.

The problem you might run into is figuring out exactly which version you need. Be careful in that so you don't get a surprise midstream.

Here's a review of a couple of the programs available this year.

I've been using H&R Block Premium software for probably 15 years or so, having switched from Turbo Tax. It takes care of all regular income including pension, SS, bank interest, stock dividends, etc. A few of the more unusual income sources or deductions may require a little more effort to fill out the form itself rather than just entering info from your statement. This version isn't aimed at people with a small business.

The program costs me around $30 because living in TX, I don't have to file state income tax  =)    although the Federal income tax is bad enough.    =(

I usually "bunch" my deductions in even-numbered years, and for non-cash charitable deductions (e.g., Goodwill & Salvation Army donations) it offers an included program called "It's Deductible" which allows you to enter common items and generates a typical "thrift shop value" for same.

I just use turbotax.  Have for years. It may not be 100% the best, but it's pretty easy, and most of my stuff carries over from last year to make life easy.  We have normal job income, a rental property, deductible expenses for the Reserves, some investment, and modest capital gains.

Since I divested myself of my master limited partnership holdings a few years ago my taxes have become VERY simple. Yes, I have investments and deductions for the house and the like, but overall, it's not bad.

I'm thinking I might try using the IRS's fillable forms site just for the hell of it.

Yes, she is a CPA that dispenses tax advise, but is on OnlyFans not PornHub.

I still use TurdboatTax but my taxes are dirt simple these days and there's no refund if you aren't paying any income taxes anymore.

I just use TurboTax as well.

They have all my info that carries over from last year etc., and the W2's just drop in from work electronically through ADP etc. I really don't feel like switching around to have to put in all my info and kids SSN's over again etc.

I promise not to duck.
