Good but obscure music [Some NSFW]
« on: September 16, 2007, 07:22:40 PM »
Thought I'd go with a heavy metal theme; it's the music of my youth but too many people only know the crappy main stream bands. So here are some of my favorites that you may not have heard of.

*Warning: may contain profanity and scantily clad women writhing seductively. View at yer own peril.

The fictional band Dethklok from the Cartoon Network Adult Swim show Metalocalypse:

"Thunderhorse" sinked to scenes from the movie 300.

Iced Earth.

Sadly I can't find a real version of it on You Tube, but Iced Earth's "1776" is the most patriotic instrumental song I've ever heard. This seems to be a fairly accurate cover.

They even did an album about American history called The Glorious Burden. Their website has a couple videos from it, including one called "Declaration Day" http://www.icedearth.com/media/videoGloriousBurden.htm

And here's them live in Athens doing "Stormrider."

Nightwish. Not usually a big fan of female metal vocals, but she seems to mostly hold off on the shrill harpy like screaming. Easy on the eyes too. smiley

"Nemo"

"Sleeping sun"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmDWvGKLzBE&mode=related&search=

Lacuna Coil. Another band with (mostly) female vocals. Good stuff. Also very non-ocularly strenuous.

"Heaven's a lie"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixxtnrWb17Y&mode=related&search=

"Swamped"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ly9E30Hc5pg&mode=related&search=

And let's not forget the old school bands that started me on my headbanging way.....

Black Sabbath.

"Paranoid" from UK tv circa 1970
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNppqUotW94

"Snowblind" live
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkbMd3Bygzs&mode=related&search=

"N.I.B. (Nativity in Black)" live from 1970
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBH0lgbTQMk

"Children of the grave" from the Masters of Reality album. First metal album I ever heard and still one of my favorites.
Album version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBsJjVS8aPA

Excellent live version.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lboS7psz-qc&mode=related&search=

One of the better new metally bands,

System of a Down often abbreviated SOAD.

"Spiders" the first time I ever heard em was live on Letterman playing this song.

Album version.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VF5hRkW1IE

Live on Conan.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lY1GEjLagE

Live in London '05
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnBM1oXo3s0

"Lonely day"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYKPyjH2sVQ

And last, a band that didn't used to suck....

Metallica

"Creeping death" live in Moscow 1991. Gotta love a song from the perspective of the angel of the Lord sticking it to Pharaoh when he wouldn't "Let my people go."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgvOtv6z7gE

"Seek and Destroy" set to anime.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUoWZ_zcPpE&mode=related&search=

Live in '89. Starts around the 2 min mark.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLBpLz5ELPI&mode=related&search=

I could go on, but this is long enough. Anyone else have a music style they love that's been brought low by a bevy of no talent hacks who want to try to clear it's name? grin

Edit to add: video of an Asian kid playing a ... cello? along with Creeping Death. Awesome. grin

I kind of like the one Dope song, "Die, MFer, Die".  Black Sabbath is one of my favorites, followed by some select Zeppelin, especially, "The Immigrant Song".

Floater - rock and roll

Fat Paw -  blend between Pink Floyd and Grateful dead, we saw them in the Grand Targhee bar 5 years ago while I was on a 3 month sabbatical.  Never been able to track them down since.

Jackstraw - Folk band from the Portland area.

Big Island Shindig - granola hippy band that can jam like hippy bands can...for hours w/o a break.

Operator - sounds a lot like Soundgarden, pretty heavy and and upbeat instead of that whining "the man keeping me down" type.

Metallica - anything with Cliff Burton (all albums before the Black Album, anything latter is lousy IMO.)

I love most of the classics like Zeppelin, Sabbath, Doors and I could go on ad nauseum.  I'm particularly fond of the Grateful Dead and that genre also.  All depends on the mood.  However, hard and heavy is still probably my favorite genre of them all.  But somedays, it just doesn't fit.

Having spent some time as a DJ in college, I could go on and on and drivel on how much I miss that life, but it's gone, I'll let it go.

I love Nightwish.  They have some new material coming out the end of this month, with a new female vocalist, Anette Olzon.
