Nick, the founders setup the government specifically to protect the rights of the minority and avoid the tyranny of the majority.  They wanted to make it as difficult as possible to pass laws, simply because they recognized that any law passed will infringe on the rights of the states and the people.

It was all about limiting the government.

Yup.  And people following those rules have gotten us to where we are today.

There was no coup.  No revolution.  No overthrow.  No foreign power invaded and took over.

The statists got us where we are today working within the founders framework.  They won, playing by the rules that were given to them.  This is nothing new, either.  They won a long time ago, starting around the time of the New Deal.

Liberty has been dead for a long time.

Yikes.

No. If they wanted that, they could have required a super-majority, or unanimity, to pass a bill. Of course, they didn't want it to be too easy, either.

No. They didn't believe that every law would automatically infringe on our rights.

Sort of. The Constitution does describe a limited government, but it was adopted with a view to creating a stronger govt. than what obtained under the Articles.

Whence shall we expect the approach of danger?  Shall some trans-Atlantic giant step the Earth and crush us at a blow?  Never.  All the armies of Europe and Asia could not by force take a drink from the Ohio River or make a track on the Blue Ridge in the trial of a thousand years.  If destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher.  As a nation of free men we will live forever, or die by suicide.  - Abraham Lincoln in a speech to the Young Men's Lyceum of Springfield, IL, 1837

An interesting quote made within living memory of the War of 1812, during which the British invaded Washington D.C., burned down many buildings, ate lunch in the White House, and sent congress skaddaddling into the countryside in fear of their lives.  =|
