Difficult Landing

This landing is ridiculous.  This pilot certainly hasn't forgotten how to hand fly the airplane!

Wouldn't it be better to install a cable set?  Of course the undercarriage would need to be beefed up to cope with the stresses.

That's the Airbus way. Specifically, the autothrust system telling us to pull the power to idle.

Looks fun.

Yowza!  Bet you could get some cheap rent on the house jutting out from the point they flew around, at 500 feet no less) right before lining up.  That might make the windows rattle a bit!

Anyone here landed at Lukla?

That'd be some massive bragging rights.

I've got $9k left on my school loans and paying about $600 a month.  After that is pilot's classes.  What's involved in being cleared to fly internationally?  It'd be fun to take a few weeks and fly around the north Pacific coast through Alaska to Japan, Okinawa, Singapore, Thailand, India, all the way up to Lukla.  Go hiking for a bit, eat some granola on top of one of the peaks, then come back.

AZ, from the US side you don't need to be cleared to fly internationally. Just file a DVFR flight plan and go. Other countries often have more restrictions, but I don't know much about the general aviation aspect.  The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association does know about international flying. Get a membership with AOPA and they can give you lots of help. You might even find someone to go with you.

I think AOPA has a discussion forum. Flying Magazine might also.

I'm betting he's thinking about renting aircraft in other countries to fly around.

It's just weird looking at a cockpit that has no stick and no wheel or yoke in front of either the pilot or the copilot. I don't think I ever want to fly one of those Airbus thingies ...

I'm a sports car racer. Looks to me like flying an Airbus would be like trying to drive an autocross in an Austin-Healy Sprite and steering with the parking brake handle.

??? Airbus has sidestick controllers, similar to the F-16. Not a big deal at all...

I find it much more comfortable and easy to fly.  More room in front of me so I can stretch or cross my legs and the computers on the 'Bus do all of the trimming, so I just point the nose where I want it and the computers hold it there.

But in a gusty crosswind, the 'Bus sucks. There is no "feel" in the controls and it is easy to get into a self-induced oscillation by overcontrolling. You kind of have to use "The Force" in an Airbus and follow trust the plane to correct for the gusts. It isn't comforting, but it works.

Out of curiousity, how long does it take the engines to spool up to power after throttle up?

I believe this is a sensitive subject for Airbus, back when they put a plane into the trees at a European air show a few years back.  If I recall correctly, this was the reason.

I believe this is a sensitive subject for Airbus, back when they put a plane into the trees at a European air show a few years back.  If I recall correctly, this was the reason.

My understanding was that the computer said, MS Word PaperClip-like: "It looks like you're landing the plane.  Now is not the time to increase the throttle setting." and over-rode the throttle input.  ;/

It was a great landing except for the trees and lack of a runway.
