The World's Most Extreme Airports
« on: July 24, 2010, 11:37:07 PM »
On the History channel right now: the top ten extreme airports of the world.

I've flown into three of them in commercial airplanes.  One today.  =D :O

10. San Diego, CA
9.  Madeira, Spain
8.  Eagle county/Vail, CO although I think Aspen is more challenging.
7.  Courcheval, France
6.  Kai Tek, Hong Kong - now closed
5.  Gibralter
4.  St Martin, Netherland Antilles
3.  St Barths
2.  Tegucigalpa, Honduras
1.  Lukla, Nepal

I saw that the other night.  Very interesting.  I have seen a lot of footage over the years on landing at Kai Tak in Hong Kong, and it sure looked exciting threading a 747 into there.

Aspen. Like landing in a toilet bowl.

Only caught the last part of the show . . . I really don't plan on flying to Nepal anytime soon.

Interesting list . . . I've flown into San Diego a couple of times, and didn't really notice anything out of the ordinary. What made that so "Extreme?"

TLC (maybe Discovery, I disremember) made a pretty good case for the airport on Dutch Harbor, in the Aleutians.  Alaska Airlines has some specially built 737's (iirc) that are part freighter, part airliner for this service.  Gusty winds, nasty approach, set into the side of a mountain, and foggy.  Very foggy.  Makes that last 3/4 mile flying the Potomac into National look like a picnic.

San Diego is the busiest single-runway commercial airport in the US (world?).  And on the final approach to runway 27, there is a ridgeline about a half mile from the runway.  There is also higher terrain to the west of the airport that must be cleared when departing from 27.  Really, it isn't very tricky, and certainly not extreme, but I didn't write the list.

I was surprised that the listing for San Diego also did not reference the crowded airspace due to traffic from North Island Naval Air Station, the Coast Guard station and the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.  Whenever I am in San Diego for a convention or business meeting, I am always seeing their rotary and fixed-wing assets flying hither and yon.

I'm surprised they didn't mention Ruth Glacier on Mt. McKinley  =D

Or is this only airports where the "heavies" land ...?

Yes, and it has a hill/lump in it. Basically, it was built on top of a ski mountain. No heavies land there, but it is a commercial airport, which is a requirement of the TV show, I think.

MKC (downtown Kansas City) was interesting sometimes. I don't know if it still is but it used to stay pretty busy even after all the biggens moved up to MCI.

Too bad they held it to Commercial. Gaston's is quite interesting.  http://www.gastons.com/airstrip.php

Denver?

And extreme turbulence.  Winter time is the worse.  Flying in/out of Denver, there will be bumps from light to Sweet Vishnu we might die.  NO way around it.  Especially if a storm is coming over the Rockies and blowing like crazy off the Front Range.

2.  Tegucigalpa, Honduras
Taking off is a lot better than landing there. When you "land" it is not a straight in approach but sort of what it looks like when jets land on an aircraft carrier but with out the hook to stop the plane.

Last year (I think) a plane was not able to stop before the end of the runway and ended up on the highway that goes past the airport.

Also, the airport itself is weird. When one arrives, the arrival area looks completely 3rd world. Lots of people sending you from table to table stamping stuff. The departures side of the airport reminded me of Mitchel airport in Milwaukee but without huge flat screens every where. This was back in 2004, they may have changed it since then.
Does any image illustrate so neatly the wrongheadedness of the Obama administration than Americans scrambling in terror from Air Force One?
