Was just reading CNN's "Where the Candidates Stand," article on the Alabama special election.
Of course, I scrolled right down to Gun Rights...
From Doug "Communist" Jones
"Jones described himself in September as “a Second Amendment guy” but said there are “limitations” and called for expanded background checks in an interview with MSNBC."
From Roy "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" Moore
At a September rally, Moore declared, “I believe in the Second Amendment” — and then pulled out a gun.
That tells me all I need to know!
-
He apparently also showed up to vote today on horseback. Whatever you think of Moore or his theatrics, the fact that lefty heads are exploding en masse is kinda worthwhile.
-
Was the gun thing maybe earlier this year or last year? Seems like I remember seeing a clip of that, but my memory is hazy.

Just a couple months ago.
As for horses, Moore traditionally rides his horse to the poll on voting day.
-
I heard on the radio today (and verified) that the statute of limitations on sexual assault down there is null:
Code Sections
Alabama Code Title 15: Criminal Procedure,
Chapter 3: Limitations on Prosecution
Felonies There’s no limit to when some felonies can be tried, including:
Any capital offense (various types of murder)
Felonies with the use, attempted use, or threat of violence
Felonies where serious physical injury or death resulted
Any sex offense involving a victim under 16 years old
No statute of limitations: rape, violent sexual abuse, sexual abuse with the threat of violence
Arson
Forgery
Counterfeiting
Drug trafficking crimes
If such is the case, why is it that none of the so-called victims" had Moore arrested?
-
1% of the vote in (likely major metro areas) and Jones has a considerable lead.
Expect that to change a lot as the rural areas come in.
-

Because their stories are weak and there's little or no supporting evidence. Some of them still might be true, but not provable.
OTOH, Moore has not sued them for slander, nor the sued the Washington Post for libel.
I kinda think there's something there, but not much, and neither side wants any close scrutiny.

3% in now, and Jones is still ahead but Moore is closing the gap.
ETA: and now Moore is ahead.
-
CNN is still showing Jones ahead, but by a scant 3 points....
Nope, just updated and Moore is ahead 1 point.
I don't like Moore. I don't believe him on his denials about the allegations against him, and I don't like him digging in his heels against the US Supreme Court (which is what lost him his job on the state SC).
But I'd rather have him in the Senate than a Democrat.
-
36% reporting Moore 52% Jones 46%
-
This per Business Insider 47% reporting Moore 51% Jones 48%
-
54% reporting. Business Insider no change in vote percentages
-
54% reporting. Business Insider no change in vote percentages
I'm watching a chart on ngr.org that updates every 10 seconds (whether there's been any change or not) and it's saying 64% in, and Moore is ahead by 50000 votes. 53% to 45.5%.
I wonder if this is really a mandate on "*expletive deleted*ck you, this is our election"
-
At what point does the MSN admit defeat in this race?
-
I haven't been paying much attention tonight. I've been reading and surfing the net a bit and I was just going to check in around 11PM and see what happened. The fact that there hasn't been a breathless blow by blow on the networks tended to tell me Moore was ahead though. Swmbo has CBS on for NCIS, Bull, and NCIS NOLA and nothing. Not even a scroll at the bottom other than the one warning about the lake effect snowpocalypse we yawn about on a daily basis for 3 months here in Michigan.
-

The Secretary of State is a Republican, so I don't think we'll have a repeat of the Franken election with endless recounts until they get it right.
If the margin exceeds the number of absentee ballots once all the precincts are in, they'll pretty much have to admit defeat. But probably not until then. And we'll never hear the end of it about how stupid and racist and homophobic Alabamans are.
-
Moore went from a 30K vote lead to 5k lead with 85% reporting.
-
I wonder if this is really a mandate on "*expletive deleted*ck you, this is our election"
I think I'm going with the latter, with the only revision being a "*expletive deleted*ck you" in general to the same people who think the entire country is made up of big cities on the coasts.
People are sick to death of being called racists, bigots, nazis, sex offenders, and every other SJW tagline. Good people who want nothing more than to get on with their lives and be left alone are sick of being told everything they do and believe is wrong. People are at the point where they will happily vote for a schmuck just to stick it to the busybodies that insist on telling them what to do and how to think. Go Browncoats.
-
And now it's a tie...
-
90% reporting. Jones with a 2k lead.

95% Jones with 8k lead. AP calls it for Jones.

UMMMMM, not quite. Had not the WAPO created the sex claims, Moore would have won this in a laugher. Now watch as the allegations are either retracted or disproven...
-
So it would seem that senate RINOs (swamp creatures?) accomplished their objective.
-
And from now on every R candidate will be smeared by the MSM as a serial sex offender....
-

They went nowhere in the last presidential race. I do agree without the allegations Moore would of won.
-
If Jones was smart, being as he knows why he won, knows that Alabama has a goodly amount of social and fiscal conservatives, should wait a few weeks to let the furor die down and then declare he's switching parties. He'd be a shoe in probably till he died or wanted to retire, plus since the RINOs are obstructing Trump, he'd fit right into that swamp and they'd support him. He's also aware that the D's are willing to throw anyone under the bus which is a change in behavior, though not with a pure heart. I guess I'm what one might call an optimistic cynic.
Interesting factoid: One of the several things I learned in my 18 years of dabbling in elected and appointed politics at the township and county level is that people tend to believe the lie over the truth.
-
The idiot party Washington division had to dabble in 'Bama politics, end result giving us Moore as the R candidate. He was, sorry to point this out, a bad candidate. He's been removed from office twice, said some very tendentious things, and whether or not the charges against him by those women were true or not, they hurt. Republican voters stayed home. Many Jones voters -- especially in the "black belt" -- (middle Alabama) turned out for him.
It is not a mandate against Trump, but it is a warning to the Swamp and the so-called deep state.
But I bet the demorats won't see it that way.
-
I hope some Republicans in Washington take heed, and start supporting the President's agenda. If they have any hope of retaining control of the Congress in 2018 (and it may well be that they'd prefer to lose it), their best hope is to start accomplishing some of the platform that gave them control of the government in 2016, rather than doing their best to stymie the President because they don't like his haircut.
-
Well, I didn't think that the disaster that was Newt Gingrich's term as speaker of the house would ever be topped.
But by damn, I think we're there.
-
Moore is such a POS.... if only the voters had listened to Trump in the primary and voted for Strange (also crooked, but light years behind Moore). What a fiasco. How long does Jones have in office before the term is up? I know it is not a full one.
-
I believe Jones is up for reelection in 2020. I know nothing about him. Given Alabama's reputation as deep red, it will be interesting to see how he votes on bills. For instance, the upcoming reciprocity bill. That has to be a favorable bill to 80% of Alabamans, regardless of party (or maybe I don't know Alabama).
If he votes "no" there, that might be telling. While not a one issue voter, I have almost always found that how a candidate votes regarding the 2nd tells me how they will vote on almost everything else I care about.
-
Also, I guess the sorta bright side here is that it will now be difficult for Franken to renege on his resignation, and on the PR side, the dems lose some "high road" ground.
On the not bright side, Hillary Clinton seems to be back in the news because of this. [barf]

Wasn't that the last time we got close to zero budget deficit?

I hope I'm wrong, but I bet CC reciprocity is DOA.

It's sad when the "*expletive deleted*ck you" vote isn't enough to carry the day.
-
It's a short term loss, an R will be back in that seat before long anyway. Assuming they can find a candidate that at least resembles a decent human being.
This is what happens when you allow your politics to become so consumed by bitterness that you back a candidate less on his personal virtues than on the loudness with which he attacks the people you hate. It’s what happens when fighting the enemy becomes more important than what you’re fighting for.
Angry populism and hating the media is not a philosophy, it is not a political ideology, it is not a platform for governing, and it’s not an all-purpose excuse for the character flaws of poorly chosen candidates.
-
I just hate that Alabama flubbed their chance to keep senator Luther Strange. What an awesome name! He sounds like a comic book villain. :D

More to the point, he thrived by pandering to the “deplorables” whom normal candidates wisely choose not to pander to. Moore pandered to those who like to engage in Confederate nostalgia, to those who want to return to the persecution of homosexuals, to those who fantasize about imposing a religious test for public office.
If the author is equating "deplorable" with "white supremacist", "religious extremist", etc. he's actually proving the point that the "deplorables" have. He sounds like maybe he's one of the Republicans who voted for Hillary Clinton.

As you are describing a politician isn't that a little redundant?
