Help with an artist's name

Okay, I'm trying to remember the name of a certain Russian surrealist artist. I saw some of his work, which included a painting of a male and female, each person as a blade of a pair of scissors, and another painting which included a setting (or rising) sun which looked like an egg, while below it was a field with a pond that looked like a frying pan.

Anybody know what I'm talking about? Could someone just give me a fairly comprehensive list of Russian surrealist artists?

Hum...

Interesting.

In the Russian surrealist movement the biggest names were probably Marc Chagall, Pavel Tchelichew, and recently, Victor Bregeda.

But... the descriptions don't ring a bell with me, but then again, I'm not all that fond of the surrealists.

Thanks for trying Mike, but it wasn't any of those three guys. I ran across a particular web page a couple of months ago with the works I've described, and very quite impressed with the paintings. But, I lost the link, and forgot the artist's name. :banghead:

In fact, I learned about this artist lurking on Sigforum. Does anyone remember a post from a couple of months ago on Sigforum with a link to an artist like the one I've described?

Kandinsky, perhaps.  Pre-Surrealism, he was an Expressionist.

He worked sometime in the 20th century. I'm thinking like recently; maybe forty for fifty years ago.
I also think his first name started with a V.

You're going to have to search Sigforums, or ask over there. There's simply not enough on which to construct a search.

Are you even sure that he's Russian?


Kandinsky never painted anything like what is being described.

I was off with the date, he's a very recent artist who's still working. I was also mistaken in asking for surrealism, his art is called metaphorical realism.

Not so much surreal as visual punning.  

The Russians, BTW, saved most of their surrealism for politics.

Yep. I realized that as soon as I found the site again. My memory didn't work as well as I had hoped it would. But, that "visual punning" is why I absolutely love that guy's work. It's really cool. And in some of the paintings I found some interesting (at least what I saw) Catholic Christian philisophies painted out in a remarkable, thought-provoking manner. I don't now if that's intentional on the part of the artist, but it really led me to think the first time I saw his work.

Man, he's got to be my favorite artist. Visual punning: I'll have to remember that as a way to describe his work.
