Need a good general purpose work glove

Pretty much as the title states. If it had some lgith insulation that would be great, but over all just looking for light protection without significant loss of dexterity.

Mechanix style gloves are what I favor. Actually prefer the Tractor Supply house brand over the Mechanix brand. Obviously dont use them when weldong or torch cutting (synthetic meltyness is bad). I also have a pair of insulated ones from walmart that are also excellent.

If you are looking for all leather then try some tig welding gloves. They are thinner.

I saw an end cap of winter gripper gloves last week. The were less than $10, we're textured rubber on the outside and were lined, but very tactile and grippy. For the life of me, I don't remember where I saw them. I'm thinking Menards, but not in the glove section...back by the tools I think.

Intended usage will be general purpose maintenance. Turning wrenches, stripping wire that sort of thing.

I have to agree with the Mechanix style gloves.  I get some knock-offs from home depot that seem to work well.

I never wore gloves for that sort of stuff except in very cold weather.

Best thing for running a saw was those knit gloves from Bailey's.  They are reversible left/right so you always have a pair.

My favorite glove when dexterity is prime is goatskin. Very thin, very supple. Not exactlty warm but something to protect from all the jabs & cuts that very cold hands seem to collect. And bonus, there's enough lanolin left in the skin to keep your hands from getting dry & cracked. Wells lamont sells them & sometimes you can find them in a driver style at some  feed stores.

for the best dexterity, common latex or nitrile gloves can't be beat.  they make a big difference for the cold as well.

I use Mechanix CG gloves for working on heavy diesels and lashing cargo down on the deck of a Landing Craft.  They work great and last a long time. For me anything lighter (like the run of the mill Mechanix gloves) don't last very long at all and get holes.  I don't pay that listed MSRP either.  I think I get them for around $20/pair.

I actually use old flight gloves that I seem to have acquired over the years. Maybe not the warmest, but allow me to do fine tasks without much trouble. Someday, when I am down to just one glove, I will have to get something else.

I'm also a fan of the flyer's gloves.  They're light enough to manipulate weapon controls, the buttons on my car radio, etc.  They also fit rather well under a normal pair of leather shells if you need additional warmth/protection.  However, they also come in an intermediate cold weather version.

Mechanix.  I've got a few pair I even use them for shooting in cold weather or running the *expletive deleted*it out of my carbine. [ar15]  Also for handling guns that are sitting out in the sun during the summer.   :O

Wore a pair to a carbine class. I don't think my hands could have survived without them.

Atlas 370 (see amazon)  My brother put me on to these a year or so ago, and they're the best thing since sliced bread.  Near bare handed dexterity, works on phone touch screens, good protection, reasonably long life, machine washable.  Only downside is pretty limited warmth.  And nice and cheap at around $3.50 a pair.

We buy those brown cotton jersey gloves by the dozen (about $1/pair).

They work for all but the coldest weather, or rough heavy work.

Might have to look into those...I don't think I've had a single pair of work gloves last for more than a few months, unless I simply wasn't using them.

Any idea how well those things would hold up to thorns?

Palms are pretty heavy duty leather, but you can still cut/pierce them.  I imagine they'd do pretty well on thorns but some care would still need to be taken.

Looking at the pair I have here, the main palm is 1/16" leather, and the padding is another 1/16" so you're looking at like 1/8" of leather and some small padding on the palm.  They're pretty tough.

We use these at work(I'm a truck driver for a battery company, so I deal with new and old batteries, wooden pallets, cardboard, plastic etc.).  I like them and find them useful for the work you describe.  Not so good to work with anything wet.  They do wear out, but they're sold in bags of 12 pair it won't matter so much if you lose a pair.  They're plenty flexible but not stretchy, so sizing is important.

Just one?   =D

I use cheap canvas and leather-palm gloves.

Or brown knit (Jersey?) gloves -- especially if I can find the ones with little plastic dots for better grip.  The dots also make them more durable.
