Jeff Bezos' new yacht is so big that it needs a support yacht.
Surprising part of the story was that the luxury shipyards are so booked that a rich guy can't get a slot right now.

And who do the libs keep attacking? Musk that's who. Meanwhile a flaming liberal gets off.

I think Bezos has the worst case of little man syndrome since Napoleon.
-
I have a good friend who is a technical superintendent and engineer for a yacht builder down in FL. They do mega yachts too. She has been busy as hell ever since she hired on five years ago when she left her Cat dealership.

Could someone like Jeff Bezos buy an OTO Melara 76 mm cannon and have it mounted on the superyacht? For a lot of these expensive yachts, I would think that pirates or highjacking would be a real concern.

Bezos could buy a Burke class destroyer as an escort with pocket change

I would imagine that a non-nation-state-navy sporting a cannon would add difficulty with making port in many places.

That explains the support yacht with the helicopter...

Actually Napoleon was right at avg height for the time. Story that I've heard for how he got the reputation for being short is that one of the hiring requirements for his personal guards was that they had to be above avg in height and thus be more intimidating and thus he appeared to be short in comparison.
-
Information I've seen says Napoleon was about 5'7".
The victors write the history books.

Also apparently a French foot was different from an English foot
So Constant tells us that Bonaparte was slightly over 5 feet 2. But the valet is of course talking of French feet and inches. This is equivalent to 5 feet 6 inches and a half in the English system, the average height of a French male at the time.

A few years back, I was reading in a sailing forum about sailing in the Caribbean and people keeping firearms on the boat for self defense while at sea. Apparently, it is a real sticky wicket coming into port down there with firearms on board.

Matt Bracken dumped guns right before being boarded by a patrol boat. I remember him posting about it on the old THR

Up here in the PNW if you set out from Washington to go fishing in the Strait of San Juan De Fuca and drift over the line to Canadian waters, the Canadians can be enthusiastic about boarding you and searching for firearms while they are on board. I read about the occasional fisherman who gets arrested for this, but fortunately, they usually just have to pay a hefty fine as opposed to being jailed.

A friend's father used to buy cheap assed firearms for his boat...
Think Davis .380s, that sort of thing, that he wouldn't mind dumping overboard if he had to.

Years ago before Shall Issue and Canada's paranoia with guns, I had a General Concealed Carry license here in Michigan. One still could not carry in Canada, though. We were going to Canada to take a hop on the Snow Train out of the Canadian Soo in the fall for the colors. I called the USA border and asked if I could store my pistol before we crossed into Canada. I was treated like I was a leper and had the plague. So I called the Canadian border office and asked if I could check my weapon there. I was told it would be no problem at all.
When we got to the border, I pulled aside and contacted the officers and they took me inside and put my pistol in a lock box, gave me some paperwork and had a nice chat for 5 minutes or so about my carry pistol, which happened to be a .40 cal Glock 27 at the time.

My experience at our Northern border was about the same. I used to visit Calgary when I lived in Montana. The person I visited has hundreds if not thousands of acres with nearly as many acres of ground squirrels. I would take a 22 or a 17 HMR up and a lot of ammo to help remedy her pest problem. Nearly every time I stopped at the border on the way up to let them know I needed to take a gun and have the paperwork to bring it back I was treated like a lifelong criminal by the US Border Protection. The Canadians on the other side looked at it, verified the serial number and that it wasn't a restricted weapon, took my 25 bucks and chatted a while about the 17 HMR and sent me on my way. The only thing they couldn't understand was why I needed a gun when I could drive from the crossing to the next town and run over all the ground squirrels I wanted. ;)
The Canadians were much more friendly and accommodating than the US side was.

Hhmm?
The article stated:
Bloomberg reported that the yacht—that has its own support yacht with a helipad—was ordered about two years ago—prior to the massive windfall for the Amazon stock during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Is it possible that Bezos had some "advance warning" that he would be getting a large windfall and to "splurge" with it while he could?[/size]
Hhmm? ;/
-
Wonder if a working submarine with torpedoes can be ordered off Amazon? Asking for a friend. >:D

A quick search says, "no," but I only have access to the normal search functions. The Chosen People, like yourself, have a larger catalog to browse.
Or...
Indonesia might have a sub for sale.

Not getting the chosen people part
Indonesia might have a sub for sale.
Too much of a fixer upper
-
Frankly, I would avoid artillery.
Small guided missiles would be MUCH more discreet.
-
Not getting the chosen people part
If you can afford to buy and operate a sub, then you must have a fat bank account. People with that much money often have more opportunities to buy select items.

He was already an extremely rich multi-billionaire. I am doubtful.

Yeah, a guy worth $200 billion buying a $500 million dollar yacht is like a guy who makes $200K/yr buying a bass boat.

1/400th of his net worth. If you have a net worth of $200,000, you can buy something for $500. Not quite pocket change, but not a financial hardship either.

How much does it cost to crew and maintain it?

I think amazon pays a bit over minimum wage . . . .

There's a super yacht app for that:
https://www.luxyachts.com/yacht-cost-calculator
His is 127 meters. Plus the "tender yacht", plus I doubt he'll charter it so subtract the income.

Now I am trying to figure if I have guns that are worth more (proportionally) than his yacht. =D

You probably spend way more (proportionally) on ammunition than he will on yacht upkeep.
-
Oh, also, that website didn't mention "helo maintenance", which will probably come close to the tender yacht costs.
-
How much does it cost to crew and maintain it?
I'd guesstimate $10 mil per year. Just for the main boat. Another $3 mil for the tender. Maybe $500k for the helo.

Re-watch Bogie in "The African Queen" and see how he "made" torpedoes. >:D
Of course, if you are a scuba diver, you can make a limpet mine and use either magnets or a special adhesive to attach it to the keel near the underside of the fuel tanks. >:D

Welcome to capitalism in action. Lots of people are getting paid because of that.

Famous quote is apropos - "If you have to ask, you can't afford it." (Attributed to J.P.Morgan)
