US Declassifies Document Revealing Israel's Nuclear Program

by publishing the declassified document from 1987, the US reportedly breached the silent agreement to keep quiet on Israel's nuclear powers for the first time ever, detailing the nuclear program in great depth.
Interesting.

Obama may not be a Muslim, but his entire Middle Eastern foreign policy seems to be centered around being pro-Muslim and Anti-Jewish.  Maybe pro-*expletive deleted*it as well, but I don't know.

However, I am not sure if releasing this actually does anything substantive to Israel in the present day.

Yep. Obama might not be a "bow 5 times daily" Muslim. But he and those around him are pro Muslim. It's that simple.

I love this - a foreign power is spying on America and using the information to undermine American foreign policy, and you guys are calling Obama the traitor for punishing them?

I was going to say that a whole lot of the American Left is pro Muslim, anti Israel as far as mid east policy goes. But the DeSelby made the point for me.

I have been accused by my inlaws of promulgating racist propaganda when relating first hand experiences with Arabs.

Regardless, you can't possibly believe that Israeli foreign policy is designed to help America in this case.

It's some serious cognitive dissonance when the "patriotic right" sides with a foreign intelligence service over the US.

No I definitely don't. I'm not actually a big fan of Israel due to all the Socialism and lack of freedoms stuff. But hey, it's their country.

It has, however, become very fashionable in some circles here to be automatically anti Israel. Obama likely travels those circles, even pre politics.

In this case, American foreign policy isn't either.

Do you really think this was done in punishment for Israel spying on the US?  Really?  Did I miss something recent?  Hasn't that been known since the 80's or longer?

Quote
Declassifying the report comes at a sensitive timing as noted above, and given that the process to have it published was started three years ago, that timing is seen as having been the choice of the American government.

US journalist Grant Smith petitioned to have the report published based on the Freedom of Information Act. Initially the Pentagon took its time answering, leading Smith to sue, and a District Court judge to order the Pentagon to respond to the request.

Smith, who heads the Institute for Research: Middle East Policy, reportedly said he thinks this is the first time the US government has officially confirmed that Israel is a nuclear power, a status that Israel has long been widely known to have despite being undeclared.

I figured it was due to the results of Israel's recent election.  The article claims different though.

Perhaps another question should be answered:  What countries with active spying don't spy on the US?  I would tend to guess that all of our allies spy on us to the extent they need to.  It may not be the same methods the Soviets used, but I figured everyone cultivates information sources in one way or another.

Yeah, the guy who is undermining U.S. policy won after trying to interfere in U.S. politics.

I understand it's been done in a fit of pique against Netanyahu and his speaking to congress.

I'm not even slightly surprised by Israeli spying. It's not like the Jonathan Pollard case is unheard of.

Yeah, and openly trying to undermine the president, combined with joining party politics?

Any other country in the world would be looking at sanctions (at minimum) for that.  Israel's domestic lobbying operations are stronger than most though.  Bush I had similar run ins with Israel.

How is having an agreement that stops nuclear development in Iran bad for America?

It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

The US stopping that daftness was anti-Saudi, though - Nasser was an pan-Arabist and the Saudis couldnt stand him.

Any time I feel the need to clarify my thinking on a matter of domestic or international policy, I just try to find an opinion on it by De Selby.  It seems so clear to me thereafter.
